Best Mods for SnowRunner: Vehicles, Trailers, Cargo, Maps, Money and Much More
Over the years since the release of SnowRunner, the fan community has released many different modifications: from vehicles and their additions to full-fledged regions. We have collected the best of them in this article. If you find just a realistic heavy machinery simulator in adverse conditions not enough, welcome!
SnowRunner mods availability for PC and consoles
To not miss new mods, follow our SnowRunner file archive. The game is available on all current platforms, but the ability to use mods depends on the specific device:
- PC (EGS, Steam) — mods are freely distributed, can be installed through the game or manually, both official and unofficial options are available. This article is mainly focused on this platform.
- PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch — developers themselves choose the mods and first send them to the platform holder for verification, and then publish them. Only official mods are available, you cannot install third-party ones. We also cannot guarantee that installed mods will always be available, they may be removed due to lack of updates.
As of spring 2022, SnowRunner still does not use the Steam Workshop platform for mods. Instead, Focus Home Interactive collaborates with the mod.io platform, all mods can be found in the section snowrunner.mod.io. On PC, there is still the possibility of direct mod installation into the game folder, which we will tell you about further.
How to install a mod for SnowRunner?
To add mods to SnowRunner and use them, an internet connection is required. In 2022, developers intensified the fight against pirates and complicated the mod installation: the game now compares the contents of the files with the data on the servers.
The installation process of mods is identical, but do not forget that the choice on consoles is limited:
- A mod.io account is required (it can be created in the game by simply providing an email);
- Open the Mods section and log in with the mod.io account (an internet connection is required);
- Now, by opening this menu, you can view, download, and manage mods;
- Select the desired mods, click the Subscribe button, they will be downloaded immediately but installed and ready at the next launch of SnowRunner.
- At the next launch, do not forget to go to the Mods section again and enable/disable the needed/unneeded mods.
To speed up the process, it is better to look at the mods in advance on snowrunner.mod.io, and then find them through the search, as the game shows only 9 items at a time.
If mods are constantly downloading but not appearing in the game:
- on PC, find the save folder, go to the folder with your profile, and delete the mod.io folder from there. Then reinstall them.
- on consoles, first unsubscribe from all mods, then reinstall the game and download the mods again.
Now you can go to the garage and buy new vehicles, add-ons for them, or head to a new location. Vehicles and their additional modules usually need to be purchased in the store, they are marked with the mod label. After purchasing the vehicle, you can customize its characteristics, appearance, shape, and so on, just like any other car.
There is still a way to directly install mods, bypassing mod.io. When it will be removed and how useful our instructions will be in the future is hard to say. Steps:
- In the Windows system folder with documents (usually C:\Documents\), find the My Games folder, within it the game folder (SnowRunner), and then follow the path base => Mods => .modio.
- In the final folder (.modio), create a text file (in Notepad) with the following content { access_token: } and save it as authentication.json.
- Create a new mod.io account (in case the main one gets blocked).
- In the mod.io profile, open the API Access section, then Manage API Keys, agree to the terms, and open the Create Access Token section, where you will select Create Token.
- Copy the token and paste it into authentication.json right after access_token with a space after the colon (see example): { access_token: qwertyuiopasdfghjkl }.
- Choose the desired mod and download it. On the mod's page on the site, note the mod number (mod ID), for example, 123456, and its name. Unzip the files using WinRAR or 7zip.
- In the .modio folder, there is a mods folder, open it (if it is not there, create it yourself).
- In the mods folder, create a new folder and name it with the mod ID, for example, 123456.
- Copy the mod's contents (excluding console files) into the folder with the mod ID that you created earlier.
- Now you need to create a text file modio.json; it is not in the archive folder. In this file, write the mod number (id) and name (name) that you noted earlier, for example: {id:123456, name:Custom vehicle mod}.
- In the future, copy this file and place it in the folders with other mods, not forgetting to edit the parameter values (you can always take them from the mod's page).
To activate the mod when the View Modifications menu item is inactive, you need to turn off the internet, start the game, load the last game session, then exit back to the Main Menu. After these actions, the View Modifications item should become active. Go to this menu: if everything is done correctly, the installed mod will appear in the list, you just need to enable it.
If you have installed a map mod, after activation you need to perform a couple more actions. Go to the New Game menu section, select Custom Scenarios, highlight the installed map by clicking on it, and press the Select button. A list of saved games will open, where you need to choose a slot for the new map. Now you can play. If a connection setup error message appears, just skip it.
How to Create and Upload Your Mod
To create a mod and distribute it to the community, you need an account on the mod.io website and authorization in the game.
To access the in-game editor, first open the menu of downloaded mods, press Space or click the More button. Then the game will suggest an area where you will create the vehicle. It is best to choose a summer map.
Here is your editing menu, at the top right. At this stage, you can create the simplest modifications by playing with the vehicle settings.
To create complex modifications, refer to the following guides:
- detailed guide on creating modifications from the developers in English and from fans in Russian;
- a newer ultimate fan guide on modifications in English;
- visual editor for game XML files (program), which does not require manual code intervention and offers great functionality;
- guide on how to release and maintain your mod on consoles.
Created mods are placed in the catalog My Documents\MyGames\SnowRunner\base\Mods\, and you can identify them by the name you give in the game constructor. They are immediately packed into a zip archive, so you just need to go to the mod.io website and click the Add Mod button. Try to add a couple of images and a detailed description of your mod. You can also set its visibility (private or public).
How to Play with Mods in Co-op and Crossplay?
SnowRunner mods can be used in online co-op. This feature works both within the same platform and across platforms, meaning SnowRunner supports crossplay with mods.
First, let's explain how to play co-op with mods:
- the host (session organizer) must have a static IP address (a service purchased from the internet provider) so that other players can connect without issues;
- all participants must be subscribed to the same mods in the mod selection menu — in the search, you need to check the Multiplayer box;
- in addition, the list of activated mods must match. Sometimes someone forgets to enable an already installed mod, and the connection fails. Also, remember that after installing a mod, it is connected at the next game launch and needs to be activated. The set of mods with these settings must match for all players;
- if the installed mods of the participants do not match, a message will appear before connecting, warning about this. The game will offer to download the missing modifications, and this will happen automatically, you just need to agree. You can check which mods are being installed in the same mod menu by setting the filter to Only mod subscriptions;
- it is best to agree on the list of mods in advance and start a new game. The host will need to play the new game up to the first garage, after which co-op will be unlocked in the session. In an already modified session, problems may arise in the future due to changes in the mod list.
Now about how to play crossplay co-op with mods:
- the host of the session still needs a static IP address;
- go to settings, enable cross-platform mode;
- together with other players, activate/install the mods that are available on the platforms of all participants (some difficulties may arise here, it is advisable to check the mods in advance);
- the host creates a session and after loading, while in the garage, presses Esc. In the menu that appears, select Manage Group;
- in the appeared menu, find the line Crossplay Game Key and inform the key to all participants.
Unlocked all vehicles and parts — unlocking all content in the game
This mod is useful for those who want to access all vehicles and upgrades without extra effort. After installing it, all the content available in the game will be unlocked.
GGMS Money Trucks and Trailers — money mod
If you want to unlock content yourself but lack the money, you can use this modification. It allows you to add a certain amount to your account, from $10,000 to a million dollars.
Note: The mod author asks not to sell trucks purchased with this money. The consequences can be most unpredictable.
Torque. Winch Range and Strength x2 — new balance
This modification changes certain parameters in the game. Thanks to it, the torque of vehicles will be doubled, the winch range will increase, and the strength multiplier will rise.
SnowRunner time control — time control
This simple mod allows you to change the flow of time in SnowRunner. You will have the opportunity to stop it, slow it down, speed it up, and rewind it. If desired, in-game clocks can be synchronized with real time.
Modifications for KAMAZ 64131
Adds three new types of engines, various types of suspensions, winches, and tires. Additionally, you will be able to customize the type of bumpers and rims.
KHAN Lo4f FlatBread — the legendary Russian vehicle Bukhanka
The famous UAZ-452, better known as Bukhanka. The modification offers several color options: from standard dark green to sky blue, with flame vinyls. As with other vehicles, a wide range of upgrades is available, including bumpers, suspensions, and engines.
Ural-63095 Typhoon-U — armored personnel carrier
An APC from the Ural Automobile Plant, distinguished by its high cross-country ability. Initially designed for transporting people, you can replace the suspension and other parts to make it a cargo vehicle. In this case, it will be possible to comfortably transport heavy loads over long distances.
Chaborz Alternative V1.0 — truck with Bigfoot wheels
This vehicle stands out with its huge wheels, similar to those used on Bigfoots. Thanks to them, it easily overcomes the most difficult terrain, such as roads with a meter-thick layer of mud. It can be upgraded with the included mod upgrades. The truck supports the installation of standard trailers and semi-trailers.
RNG Military Trailer Pack v2.0.0 — military trailer pack
This modification adds many trailers used on military trucks to the game. Among them are open platforms, field kitchens, and much more. They are compatible with both standard vehicles and those added to SnowRunner via mods.
Poghrims Trailer Pack v10.1.0 — civilian trailer pack
Another set of trailers. It includes small and large platforms, car transport platforms, and small tanks for flammable liquids. Depending on the type of trailer, they can be attached to heavy ten-wheel trucks or light pickups.
Kaizen World Roamer
Kaizen World Roamer is a powerful pickup truck, ideal for off-roading, transporting small loads (various racks are supported), and exploring the terrain. The upgrade process is lengthy, and at max level, the vehicle becomes significantly cooler.
2020 Roamer
2020 Roamer is a pickup truck suitable for extreme off-roading, transforming almost into a monster truck at its maximum upgrade. You will be pleased with the extensive customization options and several rack variants. However, this vehicle is best suited for terrain reconnaissance.
Vincenzo Galaxy
Vincenzo Galaxy is a sports car based on the famous rally Lancia Stratos. Modifications can be installed to make it more suitable for problematic asphalt sections on SnowRunner maps while maintaining acceleration and speed.
GGMS Lupus
GGMS Lupus is a modern rally car with drifting capabilities. Modifications will make it more sporty or more suitable for off-roading. It features a vast amount of exterior changes and a highly detailed interior. Don't miss out.
C.C.M. 71 Plymouth Satellite and Stuttgart 9110 Safari
C.C.M. 71 Plymouth Satellite and Stuttgart 9110 Safari are replicas of the famously bold-looking 1971 Plymouth Satellite and Porsche 911, respectively. Minor upgrades will make them more suitable for problematic asphalt sections, but you should stay away from off-roading.
GAZ-21 Volga
GAZ-21 Volga is a cult car from the USSR that can be both a vintage taxi and a capable off-roader. There are plenty of modifications for appearance and performance. It looks especially good on Soviet maps.
Trail-Rod
Marauder is a six-wheeled retro-futuristic vehicle that is capable of a lot. The low and high saddle allows it to pull both trailers and entire platforms behind it! And a cool exterior!
RNG MPV
RNG MPV is a militarized armored vehicle capable of towing trailers with useful loads, launching drones (the best radar implementation), and overcoming any obstacles at high speed. We also recommend other mods by RNG, he knows his stuff.
Azov 73210 Kikimora
Azov 73210 Kikimora is a reworked version of the original truck with improved handling, physics, range, and many useful additions for cargo transportation, new skins, and exterior details. Already a great vehicle made even better.
Tayga 6455B Wolverine
Tayga 6455B Wolverine is a slightly tweaked and refined version of the regular Tayga 6455. Dual tires for mud, a folding platform, a tarp, several new paint jobs, and bumpers.
Tenno T-21
Tenno is a workhorse, not just a truck. It has a repair module, a large fuel tank, a mini-crane combined with cargo platforms, a heavy-duty recovery crane for the toughest conditions, and a powerful engine.
KamAZ-Arktika
KamAZ-Arktika is a powerful and easy-to-handle vehicle that cannot get stuck or sink anywhere. The mini-crane and the ability to attach various trailers and large platforms to the truck frame make it indispensable for conquering snowy expanses and overcoming extreme situations.
Ural-375D / 377
Ural-375D / 377 is a classic army Ural. The mod author has made the model as realistic as possible: engine sound, technical characteristics, interior, and exterior. The vehicle stands out with a unique reconnaissance antenna and a searchlight.
GWC Goliath
GWC Goliath supports all standard modules (ramp, trailer, tanker, radio, etc.), and also has several of its own, including a long 8-slot trailer. A powerful and easy-to-handle vehicle, suitable for the quick transport of almost any cargo.
Mustang 65201 Euro 3 and Mustang 65201 Euro 4
Mustang Euro 3 and Mustang Euro 4 are similar modifications based on the KAMAZ 65201 prototype. A whole series of successful modules have made these vehicles indispensable in the household: the powerful Krasnoyarets crane can lift any 6x6 truck, deploy spans of a mobile bridge, and repair a section of the road. The standard trailer and mini-crane make these vehicles ideal for find and bring tasks.
Mazla Model 7907
Mazla Model 7907 is not fast, but a capable 20-wheeled vehicle that can go anywhere. Two medium-sized ramps in the middle are connected by a productive mini-crane. It supports almost the entire set of modules and can carry up to 13 loads at once. Ideally suited for hauling special cargo, such as an aircraft fuselage.
Z2 CAT Hills TH357
Z2 CAT Hills TH357 is a mobile ramp attached to a small vehicle. Suitable when you need to lay a route in places clearly not intended by the developers. The length of the ramp allows you to climb an entire hill!
Z2 B1Movable Bridge
Z2 B1Movable Bridge is a huge movable bridge, and it's extendable! It can replace a small broken stationary bridge or cover a wide river or difficult swamp. Just drive it there and then extend it.
Z2 KOLOB 74941 ZZ «Boss»
Z2 KOLOB 74941 ZZ «Boss» is a huge 12-wheeled vehicle that allows you to carry 20 blocks in 8 slots on two flat decks. It accepts boxes, containers, barrels, tanks, log packs, and even passenger cars! The unique cargo management function allows you to unpack and pack it without an assistant vehicle.
Summer and Winter version of the Cascade Springs map
Cascade Springs is perhaps the best map for this game. The region features a temperate continental climate and a mixed deciduous-taiga biome. On large maps, you will encounter all types of surfaces and obstacles and give your truck fleet a good workout while completing a series of local quests.
Rockrunner MUD Park
Rockrunner MUD Park is a small map completely covered with various types of mud and swamps typical of Florida, so you can test each of your trucks for passability in the harshest conditions.
Red Canyon
Red Canyon — no swamps and rivers, but lots of crevices, steep climbs and descents, and a huge crack in the middle of the map. And no trees for winch anchoring, so you'll have to drive carefully. Also, not a single soul for many kilometers around, so after a rollover, you might lose your vehicle forever.
Tumbler Ridge
Tumbler Ridge — a beautiful and vast map somewhere in Central Europe. The local beauty can be very dangerous as soon as you hit the local dirt roads. Be ready to roll through mud in all its forms. Cross wide and narrow rivers, deep streams. Enter and exit swamps.
Rail Trail Exploration
Rail Trail Exploration — another map for those ready for extreme off-roading. The almost complete lack of asphalt is compensated by small rivers running along and across.
Limes Mud Park
Limes Mud Park — mud baths of various depths, shapes, sizes, and densities, swamps and lakes, artificial structures imitating mountain climbs and descents, paved and dirt roads. What else do you need to evaluate your new vehicle?
Testing cars on the winter map и Testing cars on the autumn map
Testing cars on the winter map и Testing cars on the autumn map — even more straightforward maps, exclusively for tests. Acceleration strip (asphalt, dirt, mud, swamps, ice). Pools with three levels of mud and three levels of water depth. Ford and river. Suspension and bridge collision checks, two slopes for rollover tests.
Bonus. List of 10 Popular Mods at Game Release
Right after the release of SnowRunner, the number of modifications barely exceeded 80. However, some of them are still very popular within the community.
- KRAZ Chaborz — a huge army truck capable of traversing any road. It can be bought in the Taimyr location and then driven anywhere. The mod has received several updates to improve performance.
- M134 Minigun — a four-wheeled buggy. Without weapons, but very nimble and not very stable during sharp maneuvers.
- Tesla Cybertruck — the famous angular monstrosity by Elon Musk is now in SnowRunner! Among the main features is the ability to enjoy off-roading without any engine noise.
- Harley Davidson Fat Boy — the first motorcycle added to the game, although visually it's just the name and a couple of well-known details from several famous motorcycles of this brand.
- Octopus — even Cthulhu conquers off-roading! Yes, you heard right, it's not a car, but an octopus that loves both splashing in water and running around in nature. A completely unique experience is promised.
- K1500 Ultra — an off-road vehicle with its undercarriage raised above the wheel rims and additional power added.
- Kolob 74760 Porter — another army truck, not as huge as Chaborz, but more passable due to its actively working suspension. You can attach a cart, crane, barrel, or house.
- Hummer H2 — if the standard capabilities of the brutal descendant of the famous American SUV did not impress you, this mod will seriously expand them.
- CASE IH 1455 XL — a tractor that is perfectly tailored for off-road work. It also allows you to attach a trailer or cart.
- Realistic Transmissions — turns all semi-automatic gearboxes into ten-speed ones with gear ratios close to reality.
