What's Going On with the PC Version of Bloodborne?

Rumors about the development of a Bloodborne remaster or a PC port have reached the same speculative heights as Half-Life 3. Over the past decade, countless fake leaks have surfaced, claiming that gamers would soon be able to play an updated and enhanced version of this classic at higher FPS. And not just on Sony consoles, but also on their PCs. However, for years, Bloodborne remained trapped on the outdated hardware of the PlayStation 4 and never received any updates for the PS5. Fortunately, the game’s story is finally beginning to move forward, and thanks to fan efforts, the project is no longer tied exclusively to Sony systems.

The Hype Surrounding Bloodborne

The reasons why the internet goes wild at the mere mention of Bloodborne are quite simple. A significant portion of the FromSoftware community considers Bloodborne to be the best game created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and his studio. This is a bold claim, given the impressive track record of the Japanese company.

Bloodborne is renowned for its unique atmosphere, combining Victorian aesthetics with several horror subgenres. The game borrows elements from Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, blending them seamlessly with cosmic horror inspired by the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Bloodborne also features such a complex backstory that it has inspired hundreds of analysis videos on YouTube, and a Reddit user named dmcredgrave even wrote a 108-page dissertation analyzing its lore.

But Bloodborne isn’t just an atmospheric adventure — it’s also an exceptional souls-like game. Faster and more aggressive than Dark Souls or Elden Ring, it features a unique system of transforming weapons, thrilling boss battles, and intricate level design. Even Miyazaki himself admits that this is his favorite project, alongside the first Dark Souls.

Do you agree that Bloodborne is the best FromSoftware game?

Where’s the Official Port? The Remaster or Remake? At Least a Patch?

Considering its critical acclaim, fan support, and sales exceeding 8 million copies, it’s hard to believe that Sony has left the game untouched since 2015. At the time, Bloodborne didn’t even receive a basic patch for the PlayStation 4 Pro to improve FPS or resolution, even though most PS4 projects were enhanced in some way. No patch has been released for the PlayStation 5 either.

Gamers find it so baffling that Sony would ignore such an iconic title that theories have emerged suggesting the publisher might be saving the game for a major remaster or even a full remake — possibly for the launch of the PS6. After all, how could the company ignore such a potential golden goose?

Sadly, it seems they can. Recently, former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida said the following about Bloodborne in an interview:

Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing. And people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated.

I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear.

Based on Yoshida’s statement, it seems likely that Sony shelved Bloodborne long ago and hasn’t revisited it since. While the decision to avoid developing a remake or sequel without Miyazaki’s involvement is understandable, the lack of a patch to upgrade the game to 4K resolution and 60 FPS is much harder to justify — especially since Sony, not FromSoftware, owns Bloodborne.

What About BluePoint?

In 2021, Colin Moriarty, founder of the YouTube platform Last Stand Media, hinted that BluePoint Games was working on something related to Bloodborne. This seemed plausible, as BluePoint — affectionately called “masters of remasters” — was responsible for the PS5 remake of Demon's Souls. While Moriarty later questioned his own sources, fans continued to believe that BluePoint and Bloodborne were a natural pairing, eagerly awaiting an announcement.

Unfortunately, the miracle didn’t happen. This month, it was revealed that BluePoint had been working on an unannounced live-service game set in the God of War universe, which was canceled.

If You Want Something Done Right, Do It Yourself

Enter the fans, who are making incredible progress on an unofficial Bloodborne port for PC using the shadPS4 emulator. The progress is astonishing: in September, the game could barely get past the main menu, but today, it’s fully playable from start to finish.

The PC version is still far from perfect due to stability issues such as FPS drops and crashes. However, it already surpasses the PS4 version in many ways, including 60 FPS, resolutions above the base 1080p, and mod support.

It’s important to note that while emulator use is entirely legal, downloading disk images to play games is piracy. Nonetheless, the fact remains: Bloodborne on PC exists, and soon the fan-made port may surpass the original in every way. Hopefully, this will encourage Sony to finally give attention to one of the most, if not the most, significant games in the PlayStation catalog.
