Warface — a free-to-play dynamic multiplayer first-person shooter. Players choose one of five classes — assault, medic, engineer, sniper, or SED — and fight in fast-paced team battles: in PvP modes against each other or in cooperative special operations against the forces of the Blackwood PMC and its experimental developments.

The game was released in 2013 and over the years has received dozens of updates and content expansions. In 2023, the project underwent a large-scale technical update. Thanks to long-term support, regular updates, and a large number of activities, Warface maintains a large player community and remains one of the notable free-to-play online shooters on the market.

Backstory

Warface - Backstory

The events of the Warface universe take place in an alternative near future, during the collapse of the familiar world order. States are weakened by economic crises and regional conflicts, while the key role in security architecture shifts to private military companies.

One of the most influential is Blackwood — a global PMC officially led by Ursula Ellis. The company quickly expands its presence worldwide, taking control of resource extraction, military facilities, and strategic territories. Under its management, a powerful army of mercenaries is formed, utilizing advanced technologies and experimental weaponry.

Behind the scenes, Blackwood is operated by Oberon White — the strategist and ideologist of the organization. He adheres to a radical idea: the existing world order must be destroyed, and a new one built on its remnants. To achieve this goal, Blackwood unleashes conflicts in various regions of the planet and intervenes in political processes.

One of the key areas of Blackwood's activity is the development of new energy sources and military technologies. A rare substance — sedrium — is discovered in anomalous zones of the Earth. According to the lore of the universe, it is a byproduct of the life activity of a prehistoric bacterium, Sedrus, brought to the planet by a meteor stream from Mars. Sedrium has a strong effect on the human nervous system, significantly accelerating the transmission of nerve impulses, enhancing reaction times, and lowering pain thresholds.

Based on these properties, SED platforms (SED — Synthetically Engineered Double) are created. These are heavy, remotely controlled combat avatars: the operator connects to the system and controls the machine through nerve impulses enhanced by sedrium. This allows SED platforms to be used in extreme conditions and dangerous areas where sending regular soldiers would be too risky.

The growing influence of Blackwood and its aggressive expansion force several states and international organizations to create combined special forces — Warface, commanded by General Lee Wharton. The division conducts operations against the infrastructure and projects of Blackwood, gradually becoming involved in a prolonged global confrontation, where control over new technologies and the future of the global security system are at stake.

Plot

Warface - Plot

At the center of the plot is the Vega-5 squad — the best fighters of Wharton, who have gone through Blackwood's captivity and the deadly trials of the "Death Rooms" complex. An important role is played by Noda (Yuki Dayton) — a brilliant hacker raised by Blackwood, who, realizing Oberon's true goals, switched to the side of Warface.

Key stages of the conflict:

  • “White Shark”. Assault on the main Blackwood skyscraper. During the operation, Warface destroys the complex, and the fighters encounter Oberon’s doubles. It later turns out that the real Oberon is most likely dead, and his place has been taken by the SED-doubles;
  • “Pripyat”. Operation in the exclusion zone, where Warface uncovers secret laboratories for the production of cyborgs. It is here that it becomes clear that Blackwood plans to replace living soldiers with an army of machines powered by sedrium;
  • “Mars”. The climax of the technological race. The Warface squad, using remotely controlled SEDs, storms the red planet to destroy Oberon's colony and prevent his ultimate triumph over human nature.

The storyline campaign is implemented as a separate mode in the PvE menu: 19 special operations are arranged in chronological order and are unlocked sequentially. They can be completed solo, with friends, or through matchmaking. The special operations are linear missions with pre-written events and combat stages.

Players sequentially complete tasks — defending points, escorting vehicles, storming fortifications, and fighting bosses. The difficulty of the mode is simplified: it is primarily aimed at familiarizing players with the lore and basic mechanics, rather than farming resources. Training and starter weapon kits for each class are provided for newcomers. However, the storytelling is far from the standards of Call of Duty: there are no full cinematic direction, frequent cutscenes, or dense narrative dialogues between missions.

Locations

Warface - Locations

The world of Warface can be imagined as a set of independent combat arenas for PvP and PvE, united by the common lore of the confrontation between Warface and the Blackwood corporation. Players do not travel through this world directly — they enter it through separate missions and maps. Each map is a compact location with predetermined movement routes, a large number of cover spots, tactical positions, and main points of confrontation.

The game features several dozen PvP maps, distributed across various modes. Among the most well-known and long-standing in rotation are “Suburb,” “Hills,” “Square,” “Oil Base,” “Alleys,” “Depot,” “Invasion,” and “Ruins.” The landscapes are quite diverse: Most of the early maps are designed in a modern or industrial style — warehouses, hangars, oil bases, urban districts. There are also more exotic decorations: tropical bases, laboratories, destroyed scientific complexes, and secret facilities of the Blackwood corporation.

Generally, maps are designed for a specific mode, and using them in several modes at the same time is rare. For example, in "Demolition," the location is built around two bomb planting points and the approaches to them, in "Assault" — around a sequential line of capturing positions, while in "Team Deathmatch" and "Meat Grinder," the main focus is on dense collision zones and controlling key passages. Maps are regularly updated: developers periodically change lighting, route geometry, and the placement of cover, eliminating excessive sightlines or side imbalances. Thanks to such revisions, many old maps remain in the game for years.

The locations feature interactive elements: ladders, climbing points, and the "boosting" mechanic, which allows two players to reach a high ledge together. Knowing such routes and heights gives an advantage, but freedom is limited: buildings are indestructible, the environment is static, and leaving the boundaries of the level or exploring the map outside of a match is not allowed.

Class System

Warface - Class System

Warface is built on five gameplay classes. Each has its own set of weapons, gear, and support abilities that affect team tactics.

Assault. A frontline fighter armed with assault rifles designed for stable fire at medium range; light machine guns are also available in certain gear sets. The key feature of the class is supplying allies with ammunition, allowing the team to hold positions longer and maintain constant pressure on the enemy.

Medic. A close-combat specialist using shotguns. In addition to high effectiveness at short range, they revive fallen allies with a defibrillator. This plays an important role in maintaining the team's combat capability and they most often operate alongside the main group.

Engineer. Responsible for technical support and area control. They restore allies' armor and set anti-personnel mines, controlling passages and narrow sections of the map. In bomb modes, this class also defuses charges faster. Armed with submachine guns, effective at close and medium range.

Sniper. Specializes in hitting targets at long distances with high-damage sniper rifles. The class serves as fire support: it controls long sightlines, covers the team's advance, and limits enemy movement in open areas of the map.

EXO. A heavy combat exoskeleton operated by an operator. This class has significantly increased survivability and uses heavy automatic weapons with virtually unlimited ammunition, but has low mobility.

Combat System

Warface - Combat System

Warface offers a vast arsenal: the game features hundreds of firearms (including various versions and modifications), as well as samples of melee weapons. Each weapon differs in shooting parameters — rate of fire, recoil, spread, and damage — so weapons of the same class feel different in battle.

Developers regularly review weapon balance: some old models periodically return to the meta after rebalancing. Shooting in the game is fast: TTK (time to kill) is low, making firefights quick and requiring fast reactions. Some players note that the feeling of recoil and impact from shots has become less pronounced compared to earlier versions of the game.

Weapons can use several mod slots simultaneously, which unlock as you level up. Scopes, silencers, grips, and other attachments allow you to change accuracy, recoil, aiming speed, and rate of fire. Under-barrel modules, including grenade launchers, are also available for assault rifles. Equipment can be changed right during the match, adapting to the situation on the map. Modifications are improved using a special resource — "parts" — allowing each player to customize their "gun" to their individual style. After reaching the maximum weapon level, progression does not stop: further ranks continue to yield parts.

Gear includes various armor sets, gloves with protective and class bonuses (for example, improving weapon control or aiming speed), as well as a set of gadgets: smoke, fragmentation, and sticky grenades, Molotov cocktails, motion sensors, ammo and medical supply boxes, and armor plates. Some gadgets unlock through campaign progression. The sound system is "tactical": footsteps and character actions sound different depending on the surface — metal, concrete, sand — allowing players to navigate using audio cues.

PvP — game modes

Warface - PvP — game modes

Matches last 8–15 minutes and follow one cycle: class and gear selection → entering the map through matchmaking → completing mode objectives (capturing points, planting bombs, eliminating opponents or bots) → gaining experience and currency. All PvP modes are available through matchmaking, some of them — through ranked matches. Access to some modes unlocks as you level up.

  • "Team Deathmatch" (from rank 1) — classic Team Deathmatch: teams eliminate each other until the kill limit is reached or time runs out;
  • "Free-for-All" (from rank 3) — "every man for himself": the winner is determined by the number of kills, respawn is available;
  • "Demolition" (from rank 4) — the main and most popular mode, available in ranked matches. Two teams of 5 players fight round by round until 6 victories or a 2-point advantage. Attackers must break through and plant a bomb at one of two sites, while defenders must prevent the charge from being planted or defuse it in time. Completely eliminating the opposing team also brings victory in the round;
  • “Blitz” (from rank 6) — a variant of “Demolition”: the bomb is already planted at one point at the beginning of the round, the task is to defuse or protect it within 90 seconds. Attackers can blow up doors and gates, expanding tactical approaches. Also available in ranked matches;
  • “Capture” (from rank 12) — you need to capture the missile launch codes and deliver them to your base while the enemy tries to interfere;
  • “Survival” (from rank 13) — a “every man for himself” mode focused on stealth. You need to eliminate enemies while remaining unnoticed. Each killed enemy drops a token with bonus points that others can pick up — including as bait;
  • “Assault” (from rank 14) — an asymmetric mode: sequential capture of three control points with the respawn point of defenders moving after each capture. Teams switch roles, victory is determined by the number of captured points;
  • “Loot” — a mode added for the 13th anniversary of the game. Teams capture points that generate ingots; the ingots must be delivered to the drop-off point. Victory is based on the number of ingots delivered or the highest number by the end of the match. The format is 5v5, combining team play and individual contribution;
  • “Clan Battles” — a separate format for clans, clan vs clan on special maps and in special modes, results affect the clan rating.

Ranked matches mainly take place in “Demolition” and “Blitz” modes on random maps from the rotation.

PvE — modes and opponents

Warface - PvE — modes and opponents

In addition to competitive PvP modes, a significant part of the Warface game world consists of PvE missions — cooperative scenarios designed for joint completion by a squad of players. In these missions, a team of several fighter players unites against hordes of enemies controlled by the game and completes sequential tasks: clearing territories, defending positions, escorting objects, or storming fortifications.

Cooperative missions usually follow a linear scenario: players advance through several zones, repel waves of enemies, and complete intermediate tasks. The finale often features a battle with a reinforced enemy or a boss. Cooperation is designed for team play and the use of class roles — medics heal allies, engineers assist with technology, while assault troops and snipers provide fire support.

Enemies in PvE are represented by the forces of the Blackwood corporation. Players have to fight various types of infantry — assault troops, snipers, shielded fighters, and other soldiers, as well as heavily armored opponents and defensive systems like turrets. In addition to regular troops, missions feature experimental developments of the corporation — cyborgs, combat robots, and other technological projects. At certain stages, reinforced enemies appear, serving as mini-bosses, and the final sections of missions often conclude with full-fledged boss battles.

Cooperative mission completion is one of the main ways to obtain certain in-game resources. PvE rewards include Crowns — a special currency awarded based on team performance: completion time and the number of points scored (for example, for kills, headshots, and completing mission objectives). The higher the final result relative to the established mission rating thresholds (Bronze, Silver, or Gold), the more crowns the team receives. The main types of missions in PvE (cooperative):

  • Daily missions — short cooperative scenarios with fixed opponents, repeated daily for rewards and currency;
  • Special operations — large cooperative missions of increased difficulty, with bosses, special mechanics, and lengthy completion. They require teamwork and role distribution;
  • Temporary PvE events — seasonal or holiday missions with unique rules, new types of enemies, and limited rewards, often tied to events or collaborations.

PvE content is regularly updated alongside seasonal events. Developers periodically add new missions, themed operations, temporary modes, and special events. Many of them have a unique atmosphere or unusual rules: for example, zombie modes, survival challenges, or events with special opponents.

Progression and rewards

Warface - Progression and rewards

Progression in Warface is built on the principle of parallel accumulation: any action by the player (winning a match or completing a mission) simultaneously advances them in several scales — from the overall account rank to the mastery of specific weapons and Battle Pass levels. This multilayered system turns every fight into an effective resource "grind" tool, where short-term goals (daily contracts) combine with long-term ambitions (reaching the highest leagues in Ranked Matches and accumulating parts for the perfect mod assembly)

Overall account rank consists of 100 basic levels and 900 prestige levels. The basic 100 levels do not reset and unlock access to modes and basic gear. Prestige ranks (from 101 to 1000) are a seasonal scale: they reset at the beginning of each new season, allowing players to earn rewards again, including golden versions of weapons.

Weapon leveling — each weapon has mastery levels that unlock modifications. All mods work simultaneously (without slot selection). For full leveling, the player receives from 3,000 to 10,000 parts; after reaching the maximum, leveling enters an infinite mode, continuing to yield parts with each new level.

Battle Pass and Contracts — the main seasonal activities. The Battle Pass offers a reward track for experience in matches, while contracts require completing specific tasks (for example, 50 headshots). These are the main ways to obtain relevant meta gear and cosmetics.

Ranking System — for achievements in ranked matches, a special currency is awarded, which can be spent in the seasonal store on exclusive camouflage, skins, and achievements. The currency does not expire and carries over between seasons, while there is a seasonal limit on earnings from matches.

Seasons, Events, and Updates

Warface - Seasons, Events, and Updates

Warface develops on a seasonal model with a cycle of about three months. Major updates bring fresh battle passes, weapons, appearances, and gameplay activities.

In 2025, four full seasons were released. The spring season "Thunder in Paradise" added the story mode "Campaign," a motion sensor, and the map "Gallery." The summer "Dangerous Attraction" brought the first stage of sound updates, the location "Amusement Park," and balance adjustments in player battles. The autumn "Port of Shadows" included a large-scale overhaul of the mod system, improved radar and chat, as well as the possibility of solo playthrough of the "Campaign." In winter, the season "Bastion" started with a new special operation "Citadel".

Updates are often accompanied by map overhauls. Thus, in 2025, the "Trailer Park" returned to the game: developers changed the geometry of levels, added cover, and new routes, refreshing the familiar gameplay.

Significant attention was paid to the sound system. Specialists adjusted the volume of footsteps depending on distance and the state of the fighter, updated the sounds when walking on different surfaces (wood, asphalt, sand), and implemented acoustic separation in indoor and outdoor environments. Improvements were introduced in stages: over the year, there were two waves of sound adjustments.

In addition to seasons, the game regularly hosts themed events with temporary modes and unique rewards. In 2025, players participated in "Curse of Anubis", "Pirate Fever," "Song of the Sea," and "Summer Zombie Hunt" — each event offered exclusive weapon series or camouflage.

Social Features

Warface - Social Features

Players can unite in clans for cooperative play and advancement in the global ranking. Clan points (CP) are awarded for participation in any modes — from regular PvP to PvE special operations (most effectively in Clan Wars). At the end of the season, the best clans receive exclusive cosmetic items, achievements, and rewards. It should be noted that the balance in ranked matches changes every season. What was "overpowered" last month may become mediocre this month.

The main competitive mode is Ranked Matches (available from rank 26). It is strictly 5×5 on a random map in "Demolition" or "Blitz" modes. Independent map selection is not available, so versatility is required.

  • Format and Balance. The matchmaking system takes into account the current progress of players. Group launches are possible with a rating difference in the squad of no more than 800 RP;
  • Discipline. Leaving a match early results in a penalty to RP and a temporary mode block. In case of a technical drop, there is a window to return to the fight;
  • Calibration and RP. The season starts with 5 calibration matches. The number of points gained or lost (RP) depends on the strength of opponents and personal contribution.

League structure:

  • Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond — each with 4 divisions (100 RP each, totaling 400 RP for promotion);
  • Master — a transition league without divisions;
  • Grandmaster — elite level (from 2300+ RP), where top players of the server compete.

Esports

The professional scene is focused around the official ecosystem of the publisher and the VK Play platform (Astrum League tournaments). For most players, "Ranked Matches" remain the main esports discipline within the client: they do not require complex registration and allow earning ranked currency, which can be spent in a special store on unique weapons and camouflages.

In-game store and economy

Warface - In-game store and economy

The modern economy of Warface is built on a combination of gameplay activities and a flexible resource system. Character progression is tied to four main currencies:

  • Warbucks — the main currency earned for participating in matches. Used to purchase basic arsenal, consumables, and open loot boxes (Warboxes) with weapons from previous series;
  • Credits — premium currency (for real money). Allows purchasing the latest weapons, unique character appearances, and speeding up progression. It is the main resource for buying the Battle Pass. Does not provide a direct advantage in battle;
  • Crowns — mastery currency awarded for completing PvE missions, performing special operations, and personal achievements in ranked matches. Elite gear and boxes with a chance to obtain permanent versions of meta weapons are available for crowns.

Warbox System (Loot Boxes). In addition to direct item purchases, the store has a loot box system. In modern realities, it is supplemented by a guaranteed drop mechanic (pity system): after opening a certain number of boxes, the player has a 100% chance to receive a permanent version of the desired weapon (golden or regular).

Warface Plus Subscription. Includes warbucks, character experience, and weapon mastery experience boosters, automatic leveling of selected weapons in the "Armory" section (bonus to experience of other weapons), blocking of any two maps in ranked matches, access to the general chat and history of ranked matches, doubled size of "Express Reserve," and one free change of character nickname or clan name.

Availability of the "Meta". Current top-tier weapons (meta) are available to players without mandatory financial investments. The main sources for obtaining powerful guns are:

  • Seasonal contracts — completing chains of tasks;
  • Battle Pass — level progression for activity in the game;
  • In-game events are themed events with unique reward shops.

Donations in Warface 2026 serve as a progress accelerator (Time-to-Win), but do not guarantee superiority in battle. The final effectiveness of a player is determined by a combination of personal skills and proper modification settings, the resources for which are obtained exclusively through active gameplay.

Server infrastructure in the CIS

Warface - Server infrastructure in the CIS

For comfortable gameplay without delays, Warface uses a network of servers in major hubs: Moscow, Novosibirsk, and Yekaterinburg. This provides stable coverage for all time zones — from the western borders to the Far East. Features of network interaction:

  • Smart matchmaking: The system analyzes the ping of all participants and automatically distributes them into clusters. This equalizes the conditions of battle and minimizes the "ping advantage";
  • Connection quality: In the realities of 2026, a ping of 5–30 ms is considered the standard for ranked matches . A delay of 50–70 ms is comfortable for PvE missions and special operations, but in competitive PvP, one should play more cautiously at such ping.

The game slid to the very bottom after mail.ru began to own it. It contains: a huge number of cheaters who are not banned by the Warface “anti-cheat” system; the damage does not go away; DLS tasks for which we paid do not count.

When contacting technical support for help with this problem, they initially answered that the tasks needed to be completed again. That is, you again waste time, energy and nerves on completing tasks from the very beginning.

And now the bot responds to technical support with a link to their post in the VKontakte group, where they promise that the tasks will be counted, but more than three days have passed and there is still no result. There is no damage in the game, they launched Synchronization there, rubbish....

10 year anniversary of the game they added a contract with brilock, gave camouflages from previous years, there are a lot of cheaters with whom they are actively fighting..... but right after a couple of hours after the update, cheaters are again running around with an aim bot, VX or Autoshot destroying RM.....

Online is constantly falling from year to year, the Bolt developers blamed the technical problems of the game and constantly make only one donation.....

Updates after the PTS come out with bugs found on the PTS...... that is, even here they can’t tear your ass off for the donation, you need more donation.....

Boxes for the in-game currency inside the game break the store, so we we'll add 5 times more per donation because they don't break the game....

I played the game from 2013 to 2017 (actively, I also played in 2018-2020). One of the worst shooters. The animations are darkness, the damage doesn’t go through (synchronization is generally stupid g.... stupid g...), there are readers, the imbalance is solved by donation and denying is stupid.

Okay, if we were talking about WF 2012-2017 (especially 2016), when you could play without donating. Now it’s just darkness, an eternal arms race, they’re actively making money from hamsters. Shooting - no comment. Shit, CS is much better. Graphics - well, the bottom (the fluff from the first person looks normal, but many of them from 3 are low-poly). If you think it's good, then you guys haven't played games from 2008 onwards. Yes, even for F2P the graph is mediocre. The community is toxic, just cr… Read full

Ну а разрабы — ещё и мошенники. it was interesting at the beginning, but when software players and a lot of purchased weapons began to appear, the interest disappeared to 0. I even deleted the game because being cannon fodder is not interesting. I understand that you need to make money from the game, but alas, I’m not rich enough to pay for the game, I’m happy I would continue to play Warface
