Remedy Outlines the Main Differences Between AA and AAA Games

Finnish company Remedy Entertainment is currently working on several projects, one of which is FBC: Firebreak, classified by the developers as an AA title.
Thomas Puha, the Communications Director, recently explained the fundamental differences between AA and AAA games:
- AAA games are large-budget projects, like Alan Wake 2, while AA games are more modest in scale, such as Remedy's FBC: Firebreak;
- The classification of an AA game depends on the budget, team size, and the amount of content available at launch;
- In FBC: Firebreak, the studio saves costs by reducing localization (fewer dubbed languages) and avoiding expensive cutscenes;
- Remedy states that regardless of classification, the studio's goal is to create a great game.
For us it means the cost of the game's development, meaning the budget, the development team size and the amount of content and features we ship on day 1. These are all intricately linked to each other. Then there's things like, we aren't doing a lot of VO localized into lots of different languages, being more economical there, which is easier when you don't have cut-scenes which are some of the most expensive things to do in video games. The aim as always is put out as great of a game as possible.
As a reminder, Remedy Entertainment is also working on Control 2 and remakes of the first two Max Payne games. Additionally, this month, the developers showcased gameplay for FBC: Firebreak.
