Upon reaching the myconid colony in Baldur's Gate 3, you'll meet two local monarchs. Glut is the dethroned ruler, while Spaw is the current sovereign. In this guide, we'll explain how to solve the monarchs' problem, whether you should take the strongman with you to your squad, and what consequences each of your choices will have.
The creatures are located in the location Underdark — Myconid Colony. You can get here after solving the story puzzle with the moon discs while on the quest Journey to the Moon Towers.
This will bring you to the settlement where you can talk to the two monarchs. Here, you can also start the quest Find the Shroomer if you talk to Derryth Bone Cloak.
The quests Defeat the Invading Duergar and Avenge Glut's Circle will become active once you speak with these characters. Note that if you somehow missed the characters and went straight to the lake and then defeated the duergar, you will have indirectly completed the first part of the quest to eliminate the enemies.
In that case, simply return to Spaw and say that the duergar are dead and the rot has been destroyed. However, the creature will ask you to deal with Nere. If you've done this as well, you'll have to return to the corpse and cut off the head. An unpleasant sight, but there's no other way to complete the quest. We've detailed all the stages in the sections below.
Before heading to the lake, you can return to Glut. He will ask to join your group to deal with the invaders. However, in this case, the enemies will attack you immediately without any conversation. If your group is modest and poorly leveled, definitely agree.
For players on the villain's path, it's best not to take Glut with you and instead talk to the duergar and agree to help him catch the runaway slave. In this case, the quest Find the Missing Boots will start, which we will discuss below.
Nevertheless, we recommend leaving the myconid in the settlement, and first gaining Geh's trust. This way, you can get closer to him to strike the first blow.
In this case, the enemy will not use invisibility with a certain probability, allowing you to deal with him faster. Besides the leader, you will also have to kill three more duergar.
After getting rid of the invaders, return to the colony and retrieve Glut. Bring him to the shore, after which you can talk to the creature.
When you initiate the dialogue, he will ask you to get rid of Spaw in exchange for the Gift of Glut's Circle. This option is perfect for players playing the villain. Be warned, this is not a request at all — if you refuse, the dethroned monarch will immediately attack you.
If you choose Glut's side, be prepared to face a large number of enemies. Literally, all myconids in the settlement will be against you.
After killing Spaw and the myconids, you will receive the title of Lord's Bracer, as well as the unusual gloves Winter's Grasp.
If you refuse Glut's offer and kill him, you can loot the following items from the corpse:
By telling Spaw that you have defeated the dethroned monarch, the player will receive the title of Unifier (before this, the myconid will call you Peacemaker).
In any case, you will gain access to the myconid hideout in this location, the entrance to which is located next to the trader. Inside, there is a corpse and some resources. As soon as you enter the lord's shelter, the quest will be completed.
Make your way to the boat and cross to the other side. Depending on your path, you can deal with the duergar or deceive them to avoid combat. You need to reach the rubble in the southern part of the location.
You can talk to the sergeant, then use explosives or the Chromatic Orb: Thunder spell. This way, you can kill Nere. Take his head and bring it to one of the myconids (depending on which path you took).
As a reward, the player will receive the rare Emissary's Amulet.
The wounded fugitive lies on a huge mushroom in the center of the colony next to Spaw.
Passing a Nature check, you'll learn she is poisoned. In this case, additional options will appear in the conversation. You can either simply take the shoes or finish her off (don't forget to take the boots off the gnome beforehand). The latter option will draw the myconids' attention — you'll have to answer to them for her death. Pass one of several checks to smooth things over, or fight them off.
If you manage to pass the check, the myconids will bring the slave back to life, only now as a servant.
You are also entitled to heal her, even if you forcibly took the shoes. For this, head to the nearby trader and purchase a Healing Potion. Select it in your backpack and press Throw. This option will unlock access to the quest Save the Gnomes in Grimforge.
Go to Geh and tell him about the boots to freely use the boat and sail to Grimforge. Once you reach this part of the Underdark and give the item to the sergeant, you will receive Armor of the Unbridled Husigo or Ring of Strength to choose from.
