Best Build for a Paladin (Minthara) in Baldur's Gate 3: Which Attributes, Traits and Subclass to Choose

Minthara is one of those companions in Baldur's Gate 3 that you can easily miss in the story (by not knowing that this character can come to your camp). Most often, Minthara joins the party if you decide to go down the evil character development path. But there is another option, although it requires meeting certain conditions. Anyway, for those who have this drow in their camp, we have prepared the best build for a paladin.

How to Play as a Paladin (Minthara) in Baldur's Gate 3

A paladin is often synonymous with valor and honor. A hero who upholds traditions and dogmas, protects the weak, and so on. In Baldur's Gate 3, you need to do this too, as it is the only class with a hidden Oathbreaker subclass. To avoid becoming one, you must first and foremost adhere to the oaths written when choosing the subclass.

It is also important to consider your attributes. The main one for a paladin is Strength, but Constitution and Charisma are also crucial. The first is your damage, the second is your health, and the third is your spellcasting attribute.

Armor should be heavy, as our Dexterity is low, which directly affects your Armor Class (AC); with a low score, enemies will easily hit you.

Recommended attributes are shown in the screenshot above.

A powerful subclass to consider is the Oath of Vengeance. Remember three crucial things you must not violate during the game:

  • Do not dissuade someone from seeking vengeance;
  • Do not leave the guilty unpunished;
  • Do not betray those who seek vengeance and do not side with the guilty.

If you adhere to all of this, you will get a very powerful fighter who provides damage bonuses not only to themselves but also to allies.

Which Spells and Fighting Style to Choose at Level 2

It's best to play from Defense, which gives +1 to AC — for Minthara, this is a necessary bonus.

The spell pool that will be most useful at this stage of the game:

  • Command;
  • Compelled Duel;
  • Wrathful Smite;
  • Thunderous Smite.

Which Spell to Choose at Level 3

To the spells listed above, add Searing Smite to make our enemies suffer even more.

Which Spell and Feat to Choose at Level 4

Here, you can choose any spell you like because we will replace it at the next level anyway.

Choose the Sentinel feat, as the paladin is a melee fighter, and your allies will definitely need your support in the form of a retaliatory attack.

Which Spells to Choose at Levels 5, 6, and 7

At these levels, you can choose spells in any order, but your final pool by the seventh level should look as follows:

  • Command;
  • Compelled Duel;
  • Wrathful Smite;
  • Thunderous Smite;
  • Searing Smite;
  • Magic Weapon;
  • Aid;
  • Lesser Restoration;
  • Branding Smite.

This is a strong and balanced spell build that will allow you not only to attack recklessly but also to act as a small support for your group.

Which Spell and Feat to Choose at Level 8

Another support spell we need is Protection from Poison, to neutralize all the negative effects of poison on you or a group member.

Feat — Tough, as our Constitution score is not very high, and HP is an important component for enjoyable gameplay.

Which Spells to Choose at Levels 9, 10, and 11

At these levels, you can also choose spells in the order you prefer, but each of them should be in your arsenal by the end. So, they are:

  • Revive;
  • Blinding Smite;
  • Crusader's Mantle.

Which Spell and Feat to Choose at Level 12

At level 12, we take Aura of Vitality, which allows you to heal yourself or an ally as a bonus action.

The optimal feat is Ability Score Improvement, but there are two options here depending on your playstyle. For those who have chosen the role of the main damage dealer, we recommend increasing Strength to 18, thereby increasing your damage. For those who have chosen the role of a tank, it is better to focus on Constitution and raise it to 16, thereby increasing your HP.
