Avowed: Consequences of Accepting or Rejecting the Power of the Voice

Avowed offers many complex decisions throughout the story, and one of them will be the choice: to accept or reject the power of the Voice. As a "Godlike," players will have to find a balance between the consequences of their choice and the discovery of new powers that will help unlock the character's potential. The difficulty lies in the fact that it is not known in advance what the consequences of the decision will be.

What is the Power of the Voice?

After you kill the Large Brown Bear Spawn of Dreams and talk to Ambassador Folshen Hilgard during the quest "Message From Afar," you will be sent to inspect the adra pillar, which will allow you to communicate with the Voice. One of your first major decisions in Avowed will come from it. After discussing the disease spreading across the land, you can press the Voice for details and ask for help.

The Voice will offer to help by asking for a "favor for a favor" in return. You can agree to help or refuse the deal. Without much explanation, you will have to make a choice. It is unclear how much you can trust this disembodied spirit and whether the power it offers is worth the deal it proposes.

Regardless of whether you decide to help the Voice or refuse the deal, the vines blocking your path forward will clear, allowing you to progress through the storyline. You will also receive a new Divine Ability, which will differ depending on the choice you make during the dialogue:

  • Help the Voice: you will receive the active divine ability "Dream Touch," which heals and revives all nearby allies and deals damage over time to nearby delamgans, dream spawns, and carriers.
  • Refuse the deal: you will receive the passive divine ability "Godlike's Will" — a bonus ability point that can be spent on leveling up.

What to choose?

While gaining an ability point has an obvious immediate benefit, the active ability is much more useful in the long run. This choice is your only opportunity to unlock it. You can use the ability to heal and revive your allies during combat, which will be very helpful in difficult battles, and also deal damage over time to certain enemies.

In addition, if you accept the Voice's help, you will have an additional dialogue option when interacting with wounded NPCs. You will be able to heal them with your divine power instead of spending a health potion.

This is far from the last time you will hear the mysterious voice in your head. It will appear again to ask you for favors during quests or in dreams. Later, you will be able to improve your relationship with the Voice or reject it. This is very similar to how you decide whether to succumb to the tempting powers of the Illithid in Baldur's Gate 3, not knowing in advance whether it is ultimately good or bad. Ultimately, how you relate to the mysterious Voice will play a role in the finale you receive.
