Avowed Companions Guide: Locations and Romance Options

In Avowed, players explore a vast region accompanied by companions. These are not random NPCs, but characters involved in dialogues. Companions also enhance the gameplay with their unique abilities, assisting in battles. We tell you where to find them, what they can do, and who you can romance.
Can You Romance in Avowed
Let's answer the most important question right away. Unfortunately, you cannot have a full-fledged romance with them as you could in Baldur's Gate 3 or Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
You can have a small romantic story with at least one of your companions. Although there are no cutscenes and romantic dialogues you might be used to. You can show interest in Kai and receive a reciprocal reaction.
To romance Kai, the first companion you meet and a representative of the coastal Aumaua race, players need to complete the character's personal quest. Specifically, the following steps are required:
- Recruit Kai by completing the tutorial and arriving at "Dawnshore."
- Talk to Kai several times in party camps.
- Complete Kai's personal questline "Battle Scars."
- Choose the dialogue option: "I feel like we've really gotten to know each other, haven't we?"
- Then Kai will reciprocate and suggest continuing the romance later (after the final boss).
- If everything is done correctly, a small epilogue will note that the couple's relationship has blossomed.
The next paragraph contains some spoilers on what to avoid in the final stages of the game if you want to see the romantic epilogue at the very end.
There are several things that can turn Kai away and prevent you from seeing the romantic ending: if you merge with the god Sapadal or join the Steel Garotte villains in the last few hours, Kai will not stay with you.
Companions in Avowed
Avowed has four main companions: Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli. You unlock them simply by following the main storyline missions — they are impossible to miss and play an important role in the story. You can take two companions with you at a time.
You will also have several situational partners during certain missions, for example, in the prologue, it's Garryck and Ilora. Garryck is by your side when you first wake up. Shortly after, you can free Ilora from her prison cell. Both will sail away on a boat from the island with you, but then you'll all go your separate ways when the prologue ends.
Each of the four companions brings their unique skills to the group to perform a different role. Your group choice will depend on your build and which characters best complement it.
You can change companions at any time by visiting the group camp. Upon leaving the camp, you will have the opportunity to choose two companions to take with you.
Companion Leveling
Avowed does not allow you to change companion equipment. This makes the choice of abilities more important. Fortunately, you can respec their abilities at any time for a small amount of gold if you don't like the build you've received.
After obtaining your first companion, you will also receive a new tab on the abilities screen in the menu. It contains a range of abilities that you can upgrade. Each companion has four main abilities, each with three upgrade levels.
One of these abilities will already be unlocked when you obtain the character. Companions share the same experience, meaning they all receive upgrade points simultaneously. Companions do not level up every time you do. Instead, they receive one ability point every few levels. Since each companion ability has four possible levels, you are unlikely to fully upgrade all their abilities by the end of the game.
Kai
Kai is the first of the four main companions you will meet and recruit in the game. You will meet him almost immediately after the prologue, and you literally cannot miss him because it is a key moment in the story.
Kai is a fighter and a representative of the Coastal Aumaua race. While exploring the world, Kai can use fiery attacks to help you burn through vine and web obstacles.
Abilities: Kai is a melee-oriented brawler who taunts enemies, increasing his defense and drawing their attacks. He also wields a blunderbuss, which can be used to ignite enemies and obstacles.
"Fire and Ire" utilizes Kai's blunderbuss. When upgraded, this ability allows for incendiary ammunition and deals more stun to enemies. It also allows Kai to instantly teleport next to a chosen enemy, making it useful when you are being pursued by an enemy.
Kai's "Second Wind" ability is also very useful as it allows the character to revive with 50% HP before going on cooldown.
Stat Bonuses: Completing Kai's training gives +2 to strength, +2 to constitution, or +1 to both stats.
Marius
In the same location after a few quests, you will unlock Marius. He will join your team during the main story quest, which cannot be missed.
Marius is a ranger of the Mountain Dwarf race. He can use his hunter's instinct to help you find treasure chests, backpacks, and other useful items.
Abilities: Marius is a stealthy hunter who specializes in dealing massive damage to weakened opponents. His abilities include bleeding effects and critical hits. His "Hunter's Sense" ability highlights enemies, loot, and plants.
"Binding Roots" entangles enemies, making them vulnerable to damage. When upgraded, the area of effect of the roots increases, as well as the stun and bleeding accumulation on caught enemies.
Marius's attacks can cause bleeding accumulation with "Wounding Shots" (Wounding Shots). When upgraded, this ability can also enhance your attacks, slowing enemies and reducing their damage mitigation.
Stat Bonuses: Completing Marius's training gives +2 to Constitution, +2 to Dexterity, or +1 to both stats.
Giatta
Giatta is a human. She is a sorceress who practices Animancy. You will meet her during a main storyline mission that cannot be missed, somewhere closer to the middle of the game. Once you assist her in the main quest, she will join your team.
She can use a special device called "Phantasmal Focus" to activate essence generators.
Abilities: Giatta can be considered a classic support character. She is a mage who also heals allies, creates protective shields, and increases movement and attack speed. She can use the skill "Spectral Jolt" to activate essence generators.
"Purification" is undoubtedly her best ability, providing substantial healing to her allies. The healing is further improved, along with knocking back enemies within a certain range and increasing damage reduction.
Giatta's "Acceleration" is the next good ability to acquire. It speeds up your movement, attacks, and stamina recovery. Further enhancement allows you to speed up the cooldown of both your abilities and your companions' abilities.
Stat Bonuses: Completing Giatta's training gives +2 to Intelligence, +2 to Resolve, or +1 to both stats.
Yatzli
Yatzli is the last companion you will find. You will add her to your party in Scattersharp. She is also a sorceress but belongs to the Hearth Orlan race. Prior to this, you will encounter her once in the open world (when she is looking for a ladder), and later you will recruit her in a mandatory main storyline mission. This will be roughly after the middle of the game.
She can dispel illusions to help you open various paths for exploration.
Abilities: Yatzli is an offensive mage who excels in long-range combat. She deals massive damage with arcane projectiles. She can also manipulate arcane energy to slow enemies and dispel illusions, revealing hidden areas.
Yatzli's best offensive ability is "Minoletta's Missile Battery," which tracks enemies and does not miss. Once it has the "Speedy Salvo" upgrade, her rate of fire increases, allowing for greater damage to enemies.
"Arduous Delay of Motion" is another useful ability that slows enemies for 10 seconds. Its only downside is that it takes some time for its effect to manifest on enemies, but its positives outweigh the negatives. You can acquire "Exhausting Field" as its upgrade to increase its radius and affect more enemies.
Stat Bonuses: Completing Yatzli's training gives +2 to Perception, +2 to Intelligence, or +1 to both stats.
Which Companions to Choose for the Party?
Your companions are geared towards helping you in combat, making your life a little easier during exploration or encounters with various bosses. However, some of your companions are more useful than others.
Each class in Avowed has different companion synergies. You need to choose the right one for your playstyle.
Best Party for a Warrior
Recommended Companions: Kai and Giatta / Marius and Giatta / Yatzli and Giatta.
As you might have noticed, Giatta is the key figure here. Her support makes her more useful in the squad. Warriors excel in melee combat, however, they need: crowd control to prevent enemies from overwhelming them, a tank to split frontline pressure, and healing to maintain an aggressive playstyle.
Kai: As a frontline comrade, Kai provides valuable crowd control, forcing enemies to focus on him and giving you a breather to deal massive damage. His survivability ensures that enemy attention is split between the two of you.
Marius: With his control skill, Marius immobilizes enemies, preventing them from dodging your attacks and making them an easy target for your melee combos.
Giatta: Provides emergency healing and offers passive healing over time, ensuring that you and Kai can stay in the fight longer.
Yatzli: The perfect choice for late-game when you have a full tank build and need magical damage in your party.
Why it works: This allows the warrior to focus solely on offense, knowing that enemies are immobilized, tanked, and healing is always available when needed.
Best Party for a Mage
Recommended Companions: Kai and Giatta.
Mages, like in any other game, can be quite fragile. That's why you might need Kai and Giatta in your team. Kai will tank for you while Giatta can support you.
Kai: His ability makes enemies focus on him instead of you, protecting you while you cast spells.
Giatta: She not only provides healing and shields but also her attack speed buffs help you cast spells faster.
Why it works: Kai will absorb damage, and Giatta will support both of you. This team mainly keeps your fragile mage safe.
Best Party for an Archer (Ranger)
Recommended Companions: Kai and Giatta / Kai and Marius.
Rangers are similar to mages—they deal damage from a distance without being able to perform well in close combat. This group will ensure your safety and allow you to survive.
Kai: Using his skill, Kai dives into the fight, taunting enemies and drawing their attention.
Giatta: Similar to the mage party setup, Giatta can ensure the safety of both you and Kai while you deal with enemies.
Marius: Once Kai's taunt ends, roots immobilize enemies, preventing them from attacking you.
Why it works: Kai and Marius provide the perfect setup to keep enemies under control, while Giatta can ensure the safety of the rest.
