The Thing: Remastered will fix the questionable infection mechanics

The developers of The Thing: Remastered, a re-release of the original 2002 horror shooter, shared new information about the project. In particular, the creators have reworked the infection mechanics — it will become more realistic.

One of the biggest problems with the original was the strange infection system. Some NPCs could start to turn according to the script even without contact with the Thing, which the players did not like. Therefore, the developers from the Nightdive studio decided to remove the scripted transformations, instead making some characters more susceptible to infection.

The infection system was implemented and available in the original game, but there were a few places where squadmates would become infected and burst-out for no reason, which players really disliked. We removed those, so now squad mates may only become infected by direct contact with a Thing beast.

Moreover, NPC survivors may even suffer mental trauma.

The Thing remaster will be an «improved version» of the original game, preserving the spirit of the original. The developers will restore the graphics and add volumetric lighting, as well as fix some gameplay mechanics, making the gameplay more friendly to new gamers. The game will run with a frame rate of up to 120 FPS on modern systems.

The Thing: Remastered will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC. The exact release date is not yet known, but the system requirements have appeared.
