Activision Admits Some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Artwork Was AI-Generated

Activision has officially acknowledged the use of generative AI in the creation of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The publisher added a disclosure on the game’s Steam page after players spotted several suspicious-looking artworks.

Signs of AI-generated assets had been noticed as early as last year. Players pointed out that some loading screens contained telltale artifacts, such as extra fingers on hands or unnatural interior details. One of the most recent incidents occurred in mid-January, when Treyarch used AI to generate a logo for the launch of the new map, The Tomb.

Interestingly, Steam's guidelines require developers to disclose the use of generative AI, yet Activision had seemingly ignored this rule. The company has not commented on today’s update to its Steam page.

It remains unclear how extensively Activision is using AI in game development. In 2024, Wired reported that the company had begun integrating AI tools into its production pipeline as early as 2023.
