IO Interactive Details Differences Between 007 First Light and Hitman Sandboxes
IO Interactive is actively applying experience from the Hitman series in the development of 007 First Light, but, as the developers assure, the new James Bond game will not be a simple clone of their past projects. The familiar "sandbox" structure remains in place — with large locations, alternative routes, and opportunities for exploitation — but the gameplay rhythm and underlying philosophy differ noticeably.
According to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, the studio aims to fully realize the potential of its levels. For example, in one episode, the player must infiltrate a chateau, which can be done through various paths. Creative Director Martin Emborg emphasizes that this reflects "Hitman DNA": multiple entry points, different playstyles, and freedom in decision-making.
At the same time, some missions, such as the level in Kensington, provide even greater freedom of action. In segments involving restricted access zones, the player decides how to proceed: stealthily, aggressively, or through combined approaches. All options are intended to be equally viable and engaging.
However, IO Interactive stresses that 007 First Light is not Hitman with a different character. Game Director Andreas Krogh notes that the studio consciously moved away from the established formula. In Hitman, the emphasis is on methodical planning — observation of NPCs, analysis of their routes, and precise plan execution. Bond operates differently: he is less reactive but more dynamic and impulsive, which required revisions to the combat system and mission structure.
The technical side presented separate challenges. Unlike Hitman, the new game incorporates pursuits and driving, necessitating the involvement of new specialists and engine improvements. According to Abrak, the goal is to go beyond IO Interactive's previous capabilities and meet the standards of a major action title.
Experience from Hitman also influenced the structure, including pacing and overall duration, although 007 First Light will not be episodic.
The release of 007 First Light is scheduled for May 27 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The original late March date was postponed for additional polishing. System requirements are available here.
