ArcheAge Review: how is the famous MMORPG doing in 2026

Back in 2013, the Korean studio XLGames, after several beta testing stages, announced the launch of a new ambitious MMORPG — ArcheAge. In colorful trailers and press releases, the developers showed a huge game world, a variety of activities and space for player interaction. The Koreans promised a game for all time, in which fans of the genre will want to stay for a long time. And in general, they did not deceive. Not surprisingly, ArcheAge found its fans and was able to captivate gamers for many years. But how does this game, which has become especially popular in Russia, feel today? Let's figure it out.

Free-to-play;
Platform: PC (Ryzen 7 5700G, NVIDIA RTX 3070, 32 GB RAM);
Playtime: 20 hours.

System requirements

Minimum: Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 @ 1.80GHz/AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA 8000/Radeon HD 4000, 76 GB HDD.

Recommended: Intel core i7/AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, NVIDIA GTX 660/Radeon HD 7850, 4/8 GB RAM, 76 GB HDD.

Let's make a reservation right away: it would be strange to do a standard review of a game released 13 years ago. ArcheAge has a lot of veterans who have known about it for a long time. This review is more for those who have never played it — for beginners who may be interested in taking a look at ArcheAge in 2026.

ArcheAge today: what is the power of MMORPG sandbox

If you remember, in the cult movie "Fight Club" there was such a phrase: "You met me at a very strange time in my life." It's a really strange period for ArcheAge. On the one hand, the main advantages of the game have not gone away, it still has a very extensive community, and it often gets into the top of the best MMORPGs. On the other hand, over the past few years, many gamers have claimed that the game is dying and online is falling. The fact remains that ArcheAge has been played only in Russia since 2024.

It's even kind of awkward to talk about the basic ArcheAge mechanics — they are well known to everyone who has spent at least a couple of hours in any MMORPG. But since we agreed that we are looking at the game from a beginner's perspective, let's explain the essence of ArcheAge gameplay in a nutshell. There is a large and seamless open world divided between two warring factions of the West and the East (all fans of open worlds may be interested in our top of the best open world games). The player creates a character, upgrades it by completing quests, joins guilds, and participates in raids and sieges. In general, ArcheAge has a lot in common with Lineage: XLGames head, Jake Song, was one of the developers of Lineage. And the controls and the targeted action game in it are like in World of Warcraft.

However, the main charm of ArcheAge has always been something else: this game was the first full-fledged "sandbox" among MMORPGs. Moreover, she still has no direct analogues in this sense. For example, in Valheim, Conan Exiles, ARK: Survival Evolved, survival, construction and crafting are well implemented, in New World: Aeternum — ownership and PvE, in Black Desert — crafting and PvE. But ArcheAge has all these elements equally.

If you don't want to die heroically during a siege or during the looting of caravans, but want to live a calm and measured life, ArcheAge, as befits a sandbox, gives you a variety of pastime options. The most obvious ones are accompanying trade caravans, agriculture, book printing, blacksmithing, and cooking. After all, you can just spend hours every evening hammering a stone in a quarry and thus level up at about the same pace as in battles. There are also minor pleasures, like composing compositions for musical instruments or participating in the trial of criminals. ArcheAge is not aggressive, it has a lot of peaceful activities, and the fair sex may be interested in this game (by the way, there is an article about the Best Games for Girls on PC and Consoles).

You can choose from 8 races (standard variations of humans, dwarves, elves, and fairies), 8 specializations, and 14 leveling branches (attack, mysticism, stealth, and others). Leveling branches can be combined to create a total of over 300 classes.: both familiar ones, like a druid or paladin, and more non—standard ones, like a freethinker or chieftain. They can be reset at any time. But let's be honest: about 10 of them are really useful, the rest were invented rather to create the illusion of diversity.

The combat system is simple at the very beginning — you only have a couple of available skills. But in the future, you will have to create combinations of skills that seriously increase damage.

Going in ArcheAge is like to work

Until you have accumulated enough skills, you will have to work hard to raise your level. Actually, one of the key drawbacks of ArcheAge is routine. The character's progression up to level 30, when access to the battle pass and raids opens, is quite easy — you just need to complete the main quest. But then the pumping slows down a lot, and the player has to perform boring actions every day for several hours, because without this, no work points are awarded (more on them later).

Most MMOs are "ownership games", they want to own you completely. However, MMORPG fans probably don't even flinch right now. For many of them, tons of routine work is what they play these games for. Seasoned gamers will note: "The initial progression is easy, so that any player can get to the activities that will allow the game to earn money." That's the way it is.

Is it possible to do without donations in ArcheAge?

ArcheAge is a free-to-play game. If you truly believe that free-to-play is a completely free game, then you're probably scolding MMORPGs for their grind and monetization. It is worth recalling that in the formulation of "free-to-play" the word "free" is more like marketing, such games need to earn something. More precisely, on someone.

ArcheAge uses two main monetization methods. Firstly, a premium subscription for 300 rubles per month (subjective, but generally inexpensive for current MMOs). A subscription gives you the right to own property (you have to pay tax for the land — yes, you can't hide from taxes even in the game), increases the experience gained and, most importantly, speeds up the acquisition of work points. The local economy is based on these glasses. Most activities either generate these points (but only online if you don't have a premium subscription) or spend them. Experienced players usually point out that subscribing actually turns ArcheAge into a competition between those who accelerate progression through investment and those who compensate for it with time by spending hours farming work points.

Secondly, as in all "free" games, ArcheAge has enough donations. The in-game store sells not only costumes, but also a variety of items to upgrade weapons and armor. If you're in the game for the sake of the process, you can get them for free by participating in raids, marathons, and events. But in this case, get ready for a long grind of mobs — according to estimates by game veterans, it can take up to six months to upgrade to high, competitive levels. Either invest money in the game — in any case, without leveling up, you will not be able to maintain the level necessary to participate in the raids: they simply will not be accepted into the group. Therefore, you will have to perform "daily" and "weekly" events, actually logging into ArcheAge as going to work.

However, there is an option to just relax in ArcheAge. For example, you can create a guild with your friends or play alone, build a house, harvest crops, fish, plant Christmas trees, mine stone, trade, and more. From the point of view of a variety of activities, ArcheAge is somewhat similar to Sims and its analogues (you can find many interesting examples of such games in our top of the Best games like The Sims). The game allows you to chill, and for this you do not need financial investments. In this case, you'll actually be playing the MMO as a single-player RPG, but what's wrong with that? Everyone plays as they want. By the way, if you are looking for good cooperative games, then we also have a top of the Best Co-op Games for Low-End PCs.

What prevents you from leaving ArcheAge and going to sleep, even if it's already the middle of the night outside?

Perhaps the current "strange period" in ArcheAge is her retirement age. Fans are mentally preparing for the possible death of the game. However, no one knows when it will come. Yes, this has already happened in the world, but in Russia it is still holding up: recently a new race of fairies was added to the game and gifts were distributed in honor of the anniversary.

For the "oldies" ArcheAge is a game about nostalgia for the days when they were 14 years old, queuing up on servers to spend the whole night in the game. Beginners, especially those who consider themselves fans of MMO games, should look into it to see the original source, which in many ways became a model for later games of the genre. Just keep in mind that the game is potentially close to closing, so it's better not to make long-term plans and invest a lot of money.

Back in 2022, XLGames announced ArcheAge 2, soon renamed ArcheAge Chronicles. However, it is expected that this will be a different game — not so much an MMORPG as an RPG with an online component and a shared open world. So it's very likely that there's not much time left to play the original, old ArcheAge.
