The Black Mesa: Military team has released a new version of the single-player mod, where players assume the role of a soldier from the HECU special forces unit, specifically Steven Mills.

The combat unit for operations in highly hazardous environmental conditions (HECU) was already depicted in Gearbox's official sequel Half-Life: Opposing Force back in 1999, but the Black Mesa mod tells its own story, unrelated to Captain Shepard's adventures.

The developers assure that the mod's plot aims to follow the Half-Life canon and not to break the official storyline. The new version 2.2 covers several chapters and offers 6 levels: Arrival, Dangerous Facility, Heavy Fire, Escalation, Eliminate Freeman, and Newcomers.
