The near future. During a global catastrophe, earthly civilization fell, leaving only rusty frames and dust. The few survivors turned the remnants of the old world into deadly combat machines and now wage war for resources on homemade armored monsters. This is the conditionally free MMO action game with a third-person view and open-world elements, Crossout — a game at the intersection of combat racing, session shooter, and sandbox genres. In the harsh world of the post-apocalypse, players need to gather resources, craft parts from them, construct unique combat vehicles, and then test their creations in PvP and PvE battles, explore the Wastelands, complete jobs for various factions, and trade excess goods in the local market.
Background of events
In 2027, humanity was swept by the "Crossout" epidemic, causing hallucinations, fits of madness, and violence in the infected. It is believed that the pandemic began after the discovery of one of the alien devices found in a UFO. Its spread was attempted to be contained with nuclear strikes on cities, but it only destroyed civilization, altered the climate, turning Earth into a desert. Those who survived all this transformed physically and mentally, forming new social structures.
The action of Crossout takes place in 2047 in the Wastelands — a sanctuary of anarchy, chaos, and struggle for resources. Aggressive gangs patrolling the Wastelands on homemade combat vehicles have become the norm, as have conflicts over the struggle for resources and technology. Many factions — the technologically advanced "Mechanics," the nomadic raiders "Madmen," or the genius-enabled "Children of Dawn" — have united into alliances and are fiercely fighting for control over territories.
Plot and characters
Like in other MMOs, the plot of Crossout serves to familiarize players with the game and its lore, and is played in "Awakening" mode. According to the scenario, a new threat has emerged in the Wastelands — the "Scavengers" faction — autonomous half-machines half-humans, created based on alien and artificial technologies, capable of stealing the memories of survivors. The story is straightforward and presented with simple tropes. There are no "heroes" per se — the player creates their survivor without being tied to any known character in the game world. The storyline mode can be almost completely ignored, and players can immediately head into PvP or cooperative raids.
Game world
In Crossout, there is no seamless open world — there is a mosaic of 78 fairly large arenas, which players access through a global map, emphasizing the session-based nature of the game. Locations are designed in different biomes: steppes and deserts, arid canyons and deep swamps, mountains and volcanoes, cities and their ruins, mines, factories, and more. Although the world does not provide infinite space for free driving, the level design leaves room for tactical maneuvers. Sure, here is the translated text:Locations with narrow passages have detours, wide spaces have tactical heights, and so on. The exploratory aspect in Crossout is limited, while most activities involve battles, as enemies are present on every map, which can and should be engaged with.
The essence of gameplay
After launching Crossout, the player immediately finds themselves in the garage — the heart of the game, where most actions take place. There, they can customize their combat vehicle by adding or removing parts like chassis, weapons, and armor, test the design on a special training ground, visit the market to buy or sell components, and interact with social elements: chat, clan, or view exhibitions of other players' vehicles.
From the garage, the player selects a mode — PvP battle or PvE raid — after which a session match begins, lasting 5–10 minutes: controlling the vehicle, shooting, and destroying enemy transports in dynamic battles. After the battle, rewards in the form of experience and resources are awarded, and the player returns to the garage for upgrades, creating a cyclical flow: preparation, battle, progression. Social functions are integrated directly into the garage, but they can be ignored, allowing players to jump straight into action.
Vehicle builder and customization
The key feature of Crossout is the virtually limitless creative freedom in building vehicles. Frames define their shape. Cabins provide thrust and energy. Weapons deliver firepower. Modules (boosters, invisibility generators, etc.) offer additional capabilities. And armor significantly improves protection. Each category has dozens of parts available, allowing for the creation of both light buggies and heavy tanks or even flying platforms with anti-gravity, but it’s not just about appearance.
Each part affects the vehicle's characteristics, such as speed, maneuverability, and durability. Vehicles are fully destructible: damage to wheels, weapons, or armor reduces combat effectiveness, while destruction of the cabin leads to defeat. Physics is taken into account: a heavy vehicle moves slower, and the recoil from powerful guns can overturn a light vehicle. Thus, players need to balance the vehicle's mass and part distribution, making construction another form of gameplay. Vehicles can be saved as blueprints and then modified, upgraded, or completely redesigned.
Game modes
Crossout features a fairly diverse set of modes, which can be divided into several categories.
Main PvP modes (classic)
- “Scrap Metal Battle”: a standard 8x8 mode where the main objective is to destroy all opponents or capture one of the points on the map. For victory, the team receives valuable resources, including scrap metal.
- “Control”: a mode with multiple capture points. The team wins if they capture all points and hold them for a certain period or destroy all opponents.
- “Counter Battle”: in this mode, players must capture the central neutral point on the map. The team that first reaches 100% capture wins. You can also win by destroying all enemies.
- “Assault”: Each team has a base for defense (blue) and a base for capture (red). The team that captures the enemy positions or destroys all opponents wins.
Raids (PvE modes)
- “Defense”: a team of players, usually 4 participants, must defend a specific object (for example, a generator) from waves of enemy bots.
- “Escort”: players must escort a convoy or valuable cargo through territory controlled by bots.
- “Convoy Raid”: the team must attack and destroy a convoy of enemy bots.
Clan Battles
- “Clan Wars”: this mode is designed for teams consisting of players from the same clan. In it, clans compete for ranking positions and receive particularly valuable rewards, such as uranium.
Brawls
- “Race”: racing on armored vehicles, where the winner is the one who crosses the finish line first.
- “Every Man for Himself”: all players fight against each other. The winner is determined by the number of enemies destroyed.
- “Big Races”: a mode with a large number of participants, where victory depends on driving skills and the ability to avoid collisions.
Other Modes
- “Awakening”: a single-player mode with plot elements. Players can explore the Wasteland, complete quests, and receive rewards in groups of up to 4 people.
- “Custom Game”: players can create their own rooms with individual settings to conduct training, duels, or just spend time having fun with friends.
- “Battle Royale”: 30 players fight on a single map, all starting with a basic vehicle equipped with a drill, then gather parts and weapons both in the game world and by defeating destroyed enemies.
Cross-platform play is available only between consoles (PlayStation and Xbox). PC gamers play on separate servers. Cross-progression is saved between Steam and Gaijin accounts.
Temporary Events
The developers of Crossout actively experiment with modes to maintain audience interest. They often introduce temporary events that completely change gameplay, adding unique vehicles and mechanics. In 2025, new modes were added:
- “Collect Scrap: Battle Walkers!”. A mode featuring battle mechs/walkers. The main goal is to collect scrap in combat conditions. Unique movement mechanics on walking machines.
- “Prototype Testing”. A mode for testing experimental vehicles. Players gain access to prototypes of weapons and modules. This allows them to try out new mechanics before they are implemented in the main game.
- “Wheels of Fate.” A racing mode with elements of luck. Random events and obstacles on the track.
- “Kaiju.” A mode with gigantic opponents, where two teams fight against huge bosses. Coordination of actions is required for victory.
- “For the Emperor!” A themed PvP mode in imperial style with special rules and unique rewards. Players participate in battles using pre-set vehicles.
- “Drone Apocalypse”: players use vehicles equipped exclusively with drones and turrets. The goal is to capture points or destroy the enemy base. The unique gameplay is focused on “indirect” combat, which significantly distinguishes it from classic modes.
- “Steel Drop”: timed for Halloween. Players fight with unique armored vehicles made in a post-apocalyptic, “rusty” style. It returns every year on the eve of All Saints' Day.
Progression and Development
The player profile development system is based on improving equipment and reputation with factions. At the very beginning, the player belongs to the “Mechanics” faction, completing daily tasks from the game and faction tasks to earn resources and initial blueprints. By making incursions into various locations, they get acquainted with other factions and gradually increase their reputation with them. This way, the player unlocks rarer “construction” parts (armor plates, frames, etc.) that are not available by other means, as well as learns new recipes for creating parts.
Each faction specializes in its own fighting style: fast vehicles with shotguns are offered by the “Lunatics,” heavy machinery by the “Scavengers,” plasma and aerial weaponry by the “Children of Dawn,” flamethrowers by the “Fire Worshippers,” and so on. Special faction machines are used to create the obtained blueprints.
Resources (scrap, wires, electronics) are obtained in battles, used for crafting, or sold on the market. Equipment can be acquired through purchases in the shop (for in-game currency or microtransactions), crafting, rewards for increasing reputation or battle pass levels, as well as the market, where prices depend on supply and demand but are limited by a “price corridor.” You can also earn extra by completing regular quests. Progression takes time, and without investing real money, advancement can be slow, especially for epic and legendary components.
Graphics and Visual Effects
The graphics of Crossout are designed in a realistic style with an emphasis on the detail of vehicles and locations. The game uses its own engine from Targem Games, ensuring high destructibility and physics. During the post-release support period, the graphical component of Crossout has significantly evolved. In 2022, the Supercharged update was released, in which the Targem Engine was upgraded to version 2.0. Scalable global illumination was added, shadows (SSCS) and local reflections (SSLR) were improved. The game also featured post-processing effects: motion blur, realistic lens flares, enhanced bloom, and color correction. These innovations made the scenes more realistic and atmospheric — on sunny slopes, cars shine with gloss, and shadows create a detailed play of light.
Support
Over the decade of its existence, Crossout has been regularly updated to maintain player interest. Among the new content, the most successful were:
- “Doomsday Machines” (2020) — players received new parts and recipes for their creation. The battle pass system offered rewards for completing daily and weekly tasks.
- “Syndicate” (2021) — a new faction emerged. The “Syndicate” is inspired by Asian corporate culture and cyberpunk. New high-tech parts, weapons, chassis, and cabins based on implant and artificial intelligence technologies were added, along with new maps and events.
- “Knights of the Wasteland” (2022) introduced the namesake faction, with its unique parts, weapons, and cabins — all designed in a medieval style. The main theme of the update was knightly tournaments and battles.
- “Drone Apocalypse” (2023) — the update focused on drones and autonomous mechanisms. New drones and parts were introduced, allowing the creation of armored vehicles.
- “Echo of War” (2024) — dedicated to military themes. Players received new parts, weapons, and cabins, this time executed in a military style.
- “Drift through the Wastelands” (2025) — a large content pack, new maps and events, tasks for the battle pass, and corresponding rewards.

Reviews and ratings
I played Crossout for about 5 years (finished in 2023, my account was banned for voicing a complaint against the developers in the game chat) and I’ll probably leave my review about this game.
Externally, the game seems to be attractive, but there are many negative aspects:
1) Lack of a plot and a more or less normal open world (where it is interesting to do something and spend a lot of time in the game). Most of the action takes place on very limited, often cramped maps where it is even difficult to maneuver.
Raids are sadly boring, and the developers regularly tweak the characteristics of the bots, then their damage is crazy, then again tolerable, apparently playful little hands give no rest.
2) For many years there has been no balance of weapons, i.e. the effectiveness of rarer weapons can … Read full
Read full
a game for those who love to collect, test and have fun. for the patient, not without a donation, well, you always get stuck in the garage in the dream of assembling the ideal car for raids, missions and a semi-open world (with a plot).
The game is terrible, one continuous donation... You won’t donate, you have players who will donate, there is no balance in the game. One review won't be enough to describe how terrible this game is. And if there was a balance, I would give her a 10!
Crossout, at 8-9 years of existence, is clearly suffocating and dying. And the development company is determined to simply pump out as much money as possible from the players while it is still possible.
There are more and more different weapons, there is no balance at all. Wild changes in the updates throw away old players who have been collecting their builds for years. And for beginners, the entry threshold is very high, i.e., you have to spend tens of thousands to abandon this nonsense in 2-3 months, do you need it?
It's too late to start playing Crossout now, don't be fools. The golden time was about 5 years ago.
Crossout is the spiritual successor to my beloved ex-Machina, but alas, not in the same form.
Recently, online games have been gaining popularity, and the gaming industry has nothing left to do to please the players. And unfortunately we got this... Of course, not everything is so bad, but still I would rather pay 3000 rubles for pre-ordering ex-Machina 2 than play this “masterpiece”. There are a lot of shortcomings, but the developers, although not very quickly, are still trying to fix them, albeit in a hellish way. For example, the well-known “ATGM”, which showed itself well only at low ohms, (that is, buggers), they were significantly nerfed. And now, a guided missile flies slower than a Kamaz truck weighing 15 tons, loaded with great ideas from its developers. I play it only because I… Read full
Read full
