With the release of GTA V in 2013, Rockstar games took another explosion and the community is still strong and growing. The main story revolves around three characters Franklin, Trevor and Michael, who may go to great lengths to earn respect and money in the underworld. Like all GTA franchises, it's an open world game, with a huge map and lots of interactable things.
From GTA IV this is a huge leap in terms of how the character interacts with other things in the world, although there are things that GTA IV did better than V was the attention to detail and physics, not to mention it messed up This wasn't exactly the right move for Rockstar.
The storyline is very interesting and the game has a lot of side missions, but the main highlight of the game is "GTA Online", a place with a strong community where Rockstar shines, as well as regular customization updates. GTA V can easily compete with new AAA projects. The question then becomes whether to recommend this game in 2021, the answer is why not! The community is still strong and Rockstar is still actively working on it. I hope GTA VI doesn't end up like Cyberpunk 2077.
