My Summer Car

Hot Finnish cocktail of third-person survival simulator and car arcade. The player is given complete freedom of action in the large open world of rural Finland, and the only task on the list is to restore the old dad's car. How to live and where to find all the necessary parts depends on the player's skill and luck.

Early 90s. A depressive Finnish village, the real backwoods. The main character is an 18-year-old boy whose parents went on vacation to Tenerife for the whole summer, leaving him in charge of the family house. Of all the entertainment — beer in the fridge, a real Finnish sauna, and boat trips. And needs — from paying utility bills to finding food and money for beer, which somehow need to be covered. For example, participate and win in the local crazy rally.

Opening the door to the garage, where the Satsuma AMP 1974 has been standing for many years, the hero launches a series of exciting adventures that arise literally out of nowhere, allowing him to learn more about the life around him and find his place in this world. He learns to repair and modify the car; gets involved in conflicts with local residents and makes new friends; gets into dangerous situations due to unruly equipment; and even finds his love.

My Summer Car has few stories, but they are all connected with characters seemingly taken from real life: a beloved but sick grandmother, a good-natured uncle, a binge-drinking alcoholic neighbor, a best friend-slacker, etc. Everyone needs help and a small moral choice. As the "Satsuma" transforms from scrap metal to a normal car, the hero himself changes. He becomes more mature, turning from a loafer into an experienced mechanic and racer, learning to overcome difficulties.

My Summer Car does not shine with visual beauties, but the atmosphere of the Finnish backwoods and the authentic Scandinavian nature, with all its endless forests, lakes, swamps, and rivers, pulls through.

The action takes place in the fictional area of Peräjärvi — an open world combining rural landscape, several settlements, wild natural territory, and a significant part of it is flooded by a lake. Everything is tied together by a ring road and a couple of smaller roads, including dirt roads.

Points of interest are present: the main character's house (the most elaborated), shops (where you can buy groceries and car parts), a workshop (for car repair and upgrading), an airfield, a bar and nightclub, a radio tower, a farm, and other places. Each is connected to a quest or an interesting story, for example, taking a photo of the skeleton of a long-burned house, you can see the ghost of the owner.

Useful items are also hidden in the game world — sets of tires, tools, car parts, logs ready for transport, expensive alcohol, a video camera, fireworks, and so on. Such items can be freely taken and provide a good boost to progress in the game. The map is open from the very beginning and players can freely explore its boundaries.

At one time My Summer Car became famous for its meticulous implementation of the car restoration process. The Satsuma consists of hundreds of parts and each has its own place and function. Само восстановление состоит из понятных этапов: сборка шасси, двигателя и коробки передач, установка крыльев, дверей и бамперов, сборка приборной панели и интерьера. Однако сборка шасси и двигателя сама по себе состоит из трех десятков собственных шагов. Ошибки на любом из них потребуют полной переборки.

У запуска авто своя последовательность действий: залить антифриз, тосол, масло, топливо, настроить и выровнять авто, отрегулировать работу двигателя и включить приборную панель. Но это еще не все, ведь машина не испытана на трассе. И тут проблемы могут возникнуть по самым разным причинам.

Течет масло: где-то не установлены прокладки или неправильно стянуты готовые блоки? Авто не заводится: клапаны слишком открыты или в бак с бензином попала вода? На повороте отвалился шланг тормозной системы, и машина ушла в кювет: шланг не тот или его забыли закрутить? Решение этих проблем зависит от смекалки игрока, а их возникновение — от точности и аккуратности при сборке.

Протагонист My Summer Car имеет ряд потребностей, которые нужно удовлетворять для его выживания: жажда, голод, стресс, отдых, не говоря про деньги. Среди возможных хобби — охота, рыбалка, приготовление кофе, исследование мира и прочее. Эти активности добавляют еще один уровень глубины в игровой процесс и позволяют добыть определенные преимущества.

Бегать по карте на своих двоих не нужно — для выполнения задач есть разный транспорт: мотоцикл, трактор, моторная лодка, ассенизатор и другие. Лихачить, однако, тоже не выйдет — полиция только и ждет нарушителей скоростного режима. Приходится следить и за состоянием техники, регулярно обслуживая и чистя её, чтобы избежать поломок и аварий на дороге.

К числу выполняемых задач относятся: участие в ралли и дрэге, расклеивание объявлений на улицах, изготовление и продажа финского домашнего вина из сахара, сбор ягод и клубники, азартные игры, доставка продуктов для бабушки, опорожнение септиков соседей, да и забрать пьяного соседа из городского паба не помешает. А если этого мало — всегда есть моды, добавляющие различный контент.
