The second gaming platform from Sony, belonging to the 6th generation of gaming systems. Its sales in Europe began on November 24, 2000, and official support ended on January 4, 2013. Sales of the PlayStation 2 became the largest in the history of Sony consoles – by the third quarter of 2011, nearly 155 million units had been sold worldwide. The PlayStation 2 has backward compatibility with PlayStation games. By the end of 2006, 2,693 different games had been released for the PlayStation 2, allowing it to take a leading position among competitors. The best of the best games for the PlayStation 2 was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The successor to the console was the PlayStation 3.
