An interactive story blending visual novel and walking simulator elements, Thing-in-Itself explores the difficulty of understanding another person. Ted and Molly are in a relationship, but their perceptions of the relationship and of each other may differ. Drawing on Immanuel Kant’s ideas, the story follows stages of their relationship and considers how perspective and surroundings shape what they see.
The player moves through the story with everyday interactions and dialogue choices, while changes to the environment accompany the relationship’s progression. There are no win or lose conditions or challenges to overcome; the focus is on the narrative and on combining interactivity with the form of a short story. Voice acting and an original score by Elena Alekseeva accompany the experience.
