Ubisoft to Protect Assassin's Creed: Shadows Developers from Harassment, Advises Staff to Conceal Workplace

Reports indicate that Ubisoft has implemented a plan to combat harassment targeted at the developers of Assassin's Creed: Shadows, which is set to release this week on March 20 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, macOS, and iPadOS.

The company aims to shield its employees from potential backlash and negative messages on social media. The anticipated hate towards the developers is linked to the presence of the character Yasuke, a Black samurai, who has stirred discontent among some gamers.

Some Ubisoft employees have reported being advised not to disclose their employment with the company to avoid online attacks.

"We're advised not to post on social media that we work at Ubisoft to avoid harassment," stated one developer.

The company is likely collaborating with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to monitor networks and protect employees from online attacks. Psychological and legal support is available for those facing online threats. Ubisoft has stated that the safety of its employees, including online protection, is its priority.

Our stance has always been that team members’ social media channels are their own. Our top priority is the safety of our employees, including online, which is why, as a standard practice across Ubisoft, we offer guidance on navigating social media, digital safety, and support for team members’ well-being. We also share resources to help prevent and protect against online harassment, something our teams have unfortunately faced.

As a reminder, the PS5 version of Assassin's Creed: Shadows has already secured the second spot among the most popular games on Amazon Japan.
