Why You Need the Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3

With the moon lantern, you can protect your squad from the dark curse. It's this curse that will hinder movement through lands tainted by shadow. Therefore, before heading to the Moon Towers, you need to find this lantern.

How to Find Non-Working Moon Lanterns. How to Save Nere in Baldur's Gate 3

If the moon lantern lacks pixie dust, it will not function. However, you can restore it if you wish. Such a lantern can be found in Grimforge, while rescuing Nere from the rubble.

When you receive the quest related to Nere, you cannot leave the location or rest. If you do, you will fail the quest and lose access to other storylines related to the dwarves.

First, talk to Trinn. According to the sergeant, to save Nere, you will need gunpowder. You can find this resource in two ways:

  • Go to Philomina's stash;
  • Search the room on the second floor of the house nearby.

The second option is simpler and faster, so we recommend using it. Once you've obtained the gunpowder, return to Nere. Do not throw the explosive powder like a regular bomb. Doing so will damage your party members. Instead, place it next to the rubble, move away, and ignite it using an arrow or a fire spell.

Additionally, you can also clear the rubble if your squad includes a sorcerer with the «Chromatic Orb: Thunder» spell. Simply direct the magic at the stones to quickly scatter them and open the passage.

After this, you can either kill Nere or secure his support. In the latter case, he promises to assist you and reward you when you meet again at the Moon Towers. However, this will result in the failure of the quest to save the dwarves. This quest will only be available if you decide to end Nere's life. You will receive the broken lantern regardless of the outcome.

How to Repair (Restore) Non-Working Moon Lanterns in Baldur's Gate 3

At the moment, it is unknown whether the lanterns without pixie dust can be repaired. This feature may be added in the future. However, you can traverse the shadow-tainted lands without the lantern by finding Dolly-Dolly-Dolly the pixie. She resides in the Underdark, a location that will be accessible in Act II.

You need to release the pixie. In this case, you will receive a special status similar to the effect of the moon lantern. Destroying the lamp will offend the pixie, and she will not assist you.

How to Find a Working Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3

You need to find Karnisc the Drider, who is hiding in the «Last Light» tavern.

Local bandits have gathered to kill Karnisc. You can wait until he takes damage before rushing into the fight.

The enemy is particularly strong due to a special ability called «Sanctuary». While it is active, Karnisc is simply invulnerable to regular attacks, only area-of-effect spells can harm him. Therefore, it's best to regroup, heal, and cast buffing spells on allies during this time. When the magic wears off, attack the villain with your most powerful attacks.

If he drops the lantern during this, he will no longer be able to cast «Sanctuary». This item is what you need.

Another lantern can be found in the Moon Towers, in Balthazar's room. But you need to get there through the Cursed Lands. More about how to find this lantern is discussed in this guide.
