Phison, a major supplier of SSD controllers, is responding to a growing number of user complaints. The company stated it is investigating the potential impact of Windows 11 updates KB5063878 and KB5062660 on drives that use its chips.
In an official statement distributed through partners, Phison officials noted that the company is "actively looking into the issue" and aims to address the problem promptly.
We have promptly reached out to relevant industry stakeholders to clarify the circumstances. Controllers that may have been affected are currently under review.
However, the company is being tight-lipped on specifics. It is unclear whether Phison acknowledges its products are directly responsible for the issues or is merely considering them as one potential cause. A list of controller and SSD models undergoing testing has also not been disclosed.
Phison emphasized that it is working closely with its partners — the drive manufacturers themselves — as those brands are responsible for releasing final firmware updates and providing end-user support. Following its analysis, Phison is expected to provide them with all necessary data and recommendations to resolve the problems.
For now, the most likely solution appears to be a firmware update for the affected controllers. However, the rollout of any such fix will depend on the individual policies of each SSD vendor. While the investigation is ongoing, Phison has promised to keep the public informed and provide updates as more information becomes available. Microsoft has not yet issued an official comment on the situation.
