Backbone releases a controller for Xbox gamers on smartphones

Backbone has announced a dedicated smartphone controller tailored for fans of the Xbox gaming ecosystem. The device, housed in a translucent shell accented with the brand’s signature green, is designed to elevate the mobile gaming experience — particularly for Xbox Game Pass users.

The gamepad stands out not only for its Xbox-inspired design but also for its practical features. Its key element is a dedicated Xbox-logo button, adapted for multiple use cases:

  • A single press opens the Xbox Guide menu in supported apps.
  • A double press triggers screen recording (this can be customized to take screenshots).
  • A long press during gameplay allows it to function as a secondary button.

The controller retains the traditional Xbox button layout, including analog sticks and triggers. According to the developers, this ensures precise control in high-profile titles like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon. The device is compatible only with smartphones equipped with a USB-C port, ruling out support for older iPhones with Lightning connectors. The new controller is available for purchase at $110.

The release of the Xbox-version Backbone One coincides with growing interest in cloud and mobile gaming. According to Microsoft, Game Pass subscriptions have surpassed 34 million, making the expansion of game-streaming devices a strategic priority. The Backbone One: Xbox Edition is positioned as a niche product aimed at gamers looking to bring a console-level experience to their mobile devices without compromising on control.
