Mobile Processor Race: Qualcomm and MediaTek Accelerate Flagship Chip Launches
Qualcomm and MediaTek are preparing to unveil their new flagship processors — Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and Dimensity 9500 — sooner than expected. According to insiders, the chip launch will take place in the fall of 2025, with the first devices based on these chips potentially appearing on the market by the end of September.
According to a trusted source, Digital Chat Station on Weibo, smartphone manufacturers are actively gearing up for the launch of the new chips. The first models featuring Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and Dimensity 9500 are expected to arrive in October, though brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo might expedite the process and unveil their devices by the end of September.
MediaTek is preparing significant changes for its new flagship. Unlike previous models, the Dimensity 9500 will feature a new architecture with a 2+6 cluster configuration. This means the processor will be equipped with two powerful Cortex-X930 "Travis" cores and six energy-efficient Cortex-A730 "Gelas" cores. This approach may come as a surprise, considering MediaTek’s previous focus on exclusively high-performance cores.
Qualcomm, for its part, aims to strengthen its position in the premium processor segment. Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is expected to feature ARM SME (Scalable Matrix Extension) support, bringing its performance closer to that of the Apple M4. This makes the processor particularly appealing for devices that require high computational power, including smartphones and tablets.
In addition to the fall launches, there could be an announcement of another processor in spring 2025 — the Snapdragon 8E Ultra. This chip will feature a unique function called Action Button, allowing users to instantly launch the camera for photo or video capture. Devices based on Snapdragon 8E Ultra are also expected to include a triple camera setup with 50 MP, 50 MP, and 200 MP sensors, ensuring exceptional image quality even in challenging conditions.
Analysts note that the release of these new processors will strengthen Qualcomm and MediaTek’s positions in the premium device market. The spring and fall of 2025 are shaping up to be a period of intense competition between the two tech giants, which will undoubtedly benefit consumers. Now, we just have to wait for the official announcements to confirm that the future of mobile technology is already on the horizon.
