Foldable 35-Inch Screen Fits in Your Backpack

Arkadiy Andrienko

The team at US startup Splay has come up with a clever way to make a big screen truly portable. Their new device, the Splay Max, is a 35-inch display that folds down compactly enough to fit inside a standard backpack or travel bag.

The compact magic lies in its pop-up tent-like design. Unfold the device, and it forms a screen made of specialized white fabric. A built-in laser projector hidden in the base beams the image onto it. Picture quality hits Full HD (1920x1080) at a standard 60Hz refresh rate. A key selling point is its total portability: the built-in battery delivers up to 5 hours of cord-free operation. The developers also emphasize eye comfort, claiming the projection emits significantly less blue light (up to 70% less, they say) and is completely glare-free compared to standard LCD screens.

Despite the large screen size, the whole unit weighs just 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs). It includes stereo speakers and supports HDMI and USB Type-C inputs for connecting video sources. The Splay Max can be set up on a table, mounted on a wall, or even attached to a standard photo/video tripod, making it highly versatile.

The developers see potential uses not just at home, but also while traveling, for off-site work meetings, classrooms – anywhere you need a large, mobile display. Folded up, the gadget and its carrying case measure less than 30 cm (12 inches) long. The Splay Max is currently available for pre-order on Kickstarter starting at $744 (approx. ₽58,000), with the first shipments expected to reach customers in November 2025.
