The Google Assistant voice helper has less than a year left. The technological generational shift at Google began almost immediately after the Gemini AI was announced, but the company has now officially confirmed that the service will be completely shut down in March 2026. This information appeared in an updated help section for Android Auto users.

The transition won't be limited to just mobile devices. Over time, Gemini will fully replace Google Assistant across the entire brand ecosystem, including smart speakers, TVs, Wear OS watches, and other gadgets. According to the developers, the new AI will understand all the same voice commands as its predecessor, with the main difference for the user being the AI's smoother and more natural speech.

However, a key question for owners of older or budget devices remains unanswered. Google has not clarified how the shutdown will affect smartphones that don't natively support Gemini features. It is still unclear whether such devices will retain access to a voice helper in a limited mode or lose it entirely.

Users who are accustomed to the Assistant should familiarize themselves with how Gemini works while it's still possible to switch between the two services. After March 2026, that choice will no longer be available, and Gemini will become the only option.

As a reminder, Google recently opened up free access to its flagship Gemini 3 model, which developers claim represents a breakthrough in logic and solving complex tasks, including programming. Thus, the final move from Assistant to Gemini appears to be a logical step in the company's strategy to fully integrate advanced artificial intelligence into all of its services and devices.
