Sony is considering a radically new approach to control for future gaming consoles. A patent has surfaced online detailing a concept for a DualSense controller that does away with conventional physical buttons and thumbsticks. According to the patent documentation, the PlayStation 6 gamepad could feature fully touch-based controls. All input elements would be virtual, with commands recognized through touches, gestures, and the position of the player's hands.
For more accurate action tracking, the patent mentions a system of so-called "anchor points," designed to register movements and correctly adapt the control interface in real-time. Sony envisions this approach making the gamepad more universal and comfortable for people with different hand sizes and play styles.
In terms of how it works, the device largely resembles touch controls in mobile gaming, but with more complex adaptation logic. Beyond simple touches, the controller supports gestures like swipes and pinch-to-zoom. The current DualSense for PlayStation 5 already uses a touchpad with similar capabilities, but in this new iteration, touch input becomes the primary method.
The idea of such a buttonless controller is sparking debate, as many gamers still prefer the tactile feedback of thumbsticks and physical keys, especially in fast-paced games. Even with advanced haptics and adaptive triggers, touch controls may feel less precise and less familiar.
It's important to note that this is a patent, not a finished product. Filing such designs doesn't guarantee Sony will release this controller with the PS6. Elements of this idea could be merged with a classic control scheme or used in alternative accessories. Nevertheless, the patent clearly shows Sony is actively exploring new formats of game interaction and isn't ruling out a move away from traditional buttons in the future.
