Valve explains why Steam Machine RAM replacement is so difficult
Accessing Steam Machine's RAM is far more involved than opening it up for an SSD swap, even though Valve still allows users to upgrade both components themselves. Valve explained that the memory slots are simply much harder to reach.
To get to the two SO-DIMM slots, owners have to remove the fan and power supply, then disconnect four ribbon cables and several antenna cables. That detail prompted Reddit user Prtsk to ask why Valve did not place the memory in a more accessible spot, like the SSD.
Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said the company avoided moving the slots because it would worsen signal integrity. Valve also rejected a separate service hatch for RAM because of safety concerns, choosing a more closed layout instead.
Valve also outlined the memory it expects users to install. The company recommends SO-DIMM modules that meet the DDR5-5600 standard or faster, and it advises against mixing modules with different capacities, frequencies, or timings.
Valve also cautions that adding more RAM does not automatically improve performance, especially if the stock 16 GB is already enough for games. In short, Steam Machine does support upgrades, but the memory path is clearly the harder one.
