This turn-based isometric strategy game centers on a military conflict between two colonies, where the struggle for resources and power shapes the battles. In Artillerists, the player destroys enemy forces, captures territory, earns in-game currency and upgrades the army. Tactical options include radar reconnaissance, volley fire and air strikes, while ammunition that indicates the proximity of enemy vehicles helps estimate how far away they are.
Economic planning, resource management and control of factories and weapons are also important to success. Battles take place on a large island with varied terrain and weather, while battlefield sizes and mission objectives vary. The game also includes additional and bonus missions with special challenges.
