Bacteria is a casual puzzle game built around the rules of the cellular automaton Conway’s Game of Life. Each level presents a square field in a stable state, and the player adds cells to find a starting arrangement that produces the required outcome after several steps: the field must either reach a halt or, in the harder mode, be cleared of living cells.
Cells can be placed individually or arranged using established patterns, including gliders that move diagonally and lightweight spaceships that travel in a straight line. Higher difficulty levels restrict the area available for adding cells.
