This strategy game follows the construction of a royal castle and the growth of a town in 1289 France. Players take the roles of master builders, building the castle commissioned by King Philip the Fair and developing the settlement around the construction site to earn prestige points. The player with the most prestige when the castle is complete wins.

Caylus offers pass-and-play on one device, matches against computer opponents with different strategies, and asynchronous multiplayer with notifications. The game won the Special Award for Complex Game at the 2006 Spiel des Jahres.
