'Monkey Island' Creator Revealed Why His Old-School Zelda-Style RPG Never Got Green Light
Ron Gilbert, creator of the cult series The Secret of Monkey Island, has been actively exploring new genres in recent years. He recently released the roguelike action game Death by Scrolling, but before that he tried to realize an ambitious project — an open RPG in the spirit of classic Link games. The idea didn't receive support: publishers considered the concept unprofitable.

At gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, Death by Scrolling was officially announced. This pixel-art roguelike RPG takes place in the chaotic depths of Purgatory. The game is being developed by Terrible Toybox (the team behind Return to Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park) and published by MicroProse Software.
