Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a survival horror game about three protagonists drawn into supernatural events on Hikami Mountain, a place associated with disappearances and paranormal activity. As they explore ruined buildings and forests, they encounter hostile ghosts and search for missing people.
The Camera Obscura is both a weapon and an investigative tool: photographs deal more damage when taken at close range and from a favorable angle, while traces revealed by the camera can lead to missing people and show fragments of a ghost’s past. A moisture system affects the strength of photographs as well as the danger posed by ghosts. A separate episode starring Ayane from Dead or Alive changes the gameplay, replacing the camera with stealth abilities.
