"I felt like the game was actually dead": the Final Fantasy IX remake reportedly reached its final stage before being shelved
Five years ago, the name Final Fantasy IX Remake surfaced by accident in a GeForce Now database leak — and ever since, Square Enix has neither confirmed nor denied the project with a single word. Now the first coherent explanation of what happened to it has emerged: according to journalist Alex Donaldson, who's covered Japanese RPGs for years, the remake really was in development, reached a very advanced stage, and was then frozen.

Naoki Yoshida says future Final Fantasy remakes could stretch beyond a trilogy
At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin, Naoki Yoshida argued during a panel with Naoki Hamaguchi that some older Final Fantasy games are simply too large to fit neatly into a trilogy. Yoshida suggested that Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy IX are so large in scope that they would likely need four or five installments instead of the trilogy approach used for Final Fantasy VII Remake.
