"I felt like the game was actually dead": the Final Fantasy IX remake reportedly reached its final stage before being shelved
Five years ago, the name Final Fantasy IX Remake surfaced by accident in a GeForce Now database leak — and ever since, Square Enix has neither confirmed nor denied the project with a single word. Now the first coherent explanation of what happened to it has emerged: according to journalist Alex Donaldson, who's covered Japanese RPGs for years, the remake really was in development, reached a very advanced stage, and was then frozen.

Square Enix Says a Final Fantasy VI Remake Would Need Four or Five Parts
Speaking at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, Square Enix producer and Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida compared a hypothetical Final Fantasy VI remake to the studio's long-running Final Fantasy VII Remake project. He said that, in his view, such a remake would probably need four or maybe even five installments to do the story justice.
