This arcade racing game centres on collisions, deformable cars and physics designed to approximate real-world behaviour. Career progression moves through three classes of events on the way to becoming the FlatOut champion, with races set in deserts, storm drains and city streets. Single-player events pit the driver against 11 rivals, while arcade races and demolition derbies include destruction challenges and time trials.

Crashes damage vehicles and can send drivers flying through the windshield. These ragdoll launches also form the basis of separate events and mini-games, which send characters through rings of fire, into basketball hoops and toward other targets. Multiplayer modes include races, derbies, stunts and head-on events, with up to eight players in a match.
