God's Basement is a first-person psychological horror game set in an afterlife purgatory. The protagonist wakes in an office and receives a phone call from an entity known as the Operator, who gives instructions and leads them deeper into the place. As the protagonist explores, memories of their past life and the horrors connected to it begin to surface.
The game focuses on exploration and narrative rather than fast-paced action, with no survival, retaliation, or hide-and-seek mechanics. Players explore an office and a house, solving puzzles and riddles of varying difficulty. Scripted events and disturbing imagery build an atmosphere of psychological horror.
