Hellbreaker is a first-person shooter in which the player battles hordes of monsters and races through levels against the clock. Scoring depends on completion time, enemies killed, and damage taken, so success calls for moving quickly, fighting rather than bypassing opponents, and dodging attacks. Weapons have no recoil or reloads, keeping combat fast-paced.
Deadline Mode imposes a time limit, which can be disabled in the settings to allow exploration and secret-hunting. The game also includes editors for levels and game objects, while its scripting tools allow monsters, weapons, and pickups to be created or modified.
