A visual overhaul mod for How to Fish that replaces the static, flat blue water plane with a fully realized procedural ocean surface. Introduces multi-layered non-repeating swell dynamics, realistic solar glint, natural coastline surf, and displacement wakes behind moving watercraft.

The water surface integrates directly with the title's illumination pipeline: it darkens during storms, absorbs warm hues at sunset, and catches point lighting from held torches and lanterns near the shoreline.

Key Features:

  • Procedural Surface Dynamics: Built using eight non-synchronous layers of drifting detail with independent axes, speeds, and scales, eliminating visible tiling patterns. Alternates between expansive calm patches and rough chop across open water.
  • Engine-Integrated Illumination: Responds dynamically to ambient light, fog, weather systems, solar angles, lunar cycles, and player-carried torches or lanterns.
  • Realistic Fresnel Reflections: Low reflection overhead at noon (exposing deep blue waters) transitions into blazing specular reflections at grazing angles during sunrise and sunset.
  • Dynamic Shoreline & Surf: Measures seabed topography in real time to generate rolling surf and foaming wash that travels up and down sandy shores with the tide.
  • Vessel Wakes: Moving boats leave behind churned, white-water wakes with heaped edges that catch light and gradually fade away. Renders for all boats across multiplayer sessions purely client-side without requiring other players to install the mod.

Installation:

  1. Install BepInEx 5 (x64) into your root How to Fish installation folder (alongside How to Fish.exe).
  2. Launch the game once to initialize directories, then exit.
  3. Place the mod file (BetterOceans.dll or the extracted archive folder) into:Э
    How to Fish/BepInEx/plugins/
  4. Launch the game.
