An action game with role-playing elements about gladiatorial combat in Ancient Rome, I, Gladiator follows Rufus, an arena champion caught in a conflict between two Roman gods. To reclaim control of his fate and seek revenge, he starts at the bottom and fights through a series of increasingly difficult tournaments in different locations.
Rufus faces several opponents at once, wielding swords, maces and spears while using different fighting styles and special moves. Arenas contain traps and environmental objects that can be turned to his advantage, while enemies have distinct weaknesses and hungry lions pose an additional threat. Victories unlock weapons and armor, and entertaining the Roman crowd earns extra income.
