A historical strategy game set during the American Civil War, in which John Singleton Mosby’s bands conduct small-scale operations against the Union’s larger forces. Rather than commanding vast armies, the player leads scouts, cavalry, rangers, and riflemen on missions to reconnoitre, ambush the enemy, seize supplies, and harass its troops. The campaign combines turn-based management of forces and resources with real-time tactical combat.
Mission objectives and enemy positions are randomized, so each operation calls for a different plan. Soldiers are recruited from local towns and gain experience, developing specializations and attributes; the squad is chosen before a mission, with no way to produce replacements during battle. Between engagements, the player invests in towns by establishing field hospitals, stables, and ammunition caches. Local support affects the availability of recruits and the supplies available to the forces.
