A hockey simulation built around National Hockey League matches, with single-player and online modes. Players control a team on the ice using revised defensive actions, physical contact and updated AI, and can play a traditional game or begin a season in Franchise mode.

Franchise mode includes roster and contract management, free agency, a financial model, player progression and fantasy drafts; its season can be played with or against a friend. Players can also create a team, design its uniforms and compete against other custom teams. Online features include team-up games, leagues, tournaments and leaderboards.
