This role-playing game follows a group of high school students caught up in supernatural incidents. After playing a fortune-telling game, they gain the ability to summon Personas and, guided by Philemon, confront forces that threaten the world. Persona was the first entry in its namesake series, a subseries of the Megami Tensei franchise.
The player leads the group through the town and other locations, then fights enemies in turn-based battles using Personas. New Personas can be created for combat from spell cards obtained in battle or by talking to enemies. The viewpoint changes with the setting: the town is shown from above, some streets and story locations from a third-person perspective, and dungeons and most buildings from a first-person perspective.
