An arcade platformer about a miner searching for gold in the Misty Mountain Mine. The miner moves between seven floors using ladders that appear and disappear, while dodging boulders rolling out of doors. A pickaxe can break the boulders, but wears out and eventually disappears.
When boulders collide, they may produce a replacement pickaxe or a key. Without a pickaxe, the miner can jump over obstacles to earn points or descend to the bottom floor to retrieve another tool. A key opens one of three doors leading to an alternate level; Pick Axe Pete! has nine such levels.
