This first-person adventure unfolds in the underground empire of Zork, believed to have been destroyed, and combines exploration with puzzles. The IT&L Corporation claims to have found its dark recesses beneath the Valley of the Sparrows; since then, people have suffered nightmares, while people and buildings have vanished. The protagonist must investigate and save the empire from the forces of evil.
In Return to Zork, the player explores the surroundings, solves puzzles and talks to characters. Dialogue offers a choice of tone, from friendly to threatening, which affects their responses. The protagonist can also take pictures and record conversations for later review.
