Set in the fantasy world of Equiada, Rising Kingdoms is a real-time strategy game with a separate adventure mode. In strategy mode, the player chooses one of three major races: Humans, Foresters, or Darklings. Independent nations — Shades, Nomads, Dragons, Trolls, and Elves — can also be subjugated and developed, then used alongside the chosen race in conflicts with opponents.

The adventure mode follows a group of heroes and a small squad of troops. Its story spans several generations and features ancient artifacts, the rise and fall of rulers and kingdoms, and the emergence of new mystical creatures and races.
