Salt is an open-world role-playing game with action and survival elements, centered on sailing, island exploration, and looting. Starting on an island with resources to build a raft, the player can choose a direction and set out across a procedurally generated world of countless islands. The journey brings encounters with ruins, merchants, pirates, and other characters, along with quests and places hiding secrets.

Completing the main quest and side quests can yield rare items. The loot system includes weapons, armor, resources, and items of varying rarity; ships can be upgraded, while larger vessels can be furnished as homes at sea. Players can also mark explored islands on the map, hunt wildlife, fish, and set out on adventures with friends.
