Shade — begins with the unnamed protagonist waking up in his studio apartment before sunrise. An inspection of the apartment shows that the main character is preparing to go on a trip to Death Valley. After the protagonist finds his plane tickets and begins to complete various tasks on his to-do list, appliances and furniture spontaneously collapse and turn into piles of sand when touched. The apartment is slowly being buried under sand dunes.
