This action platformer with puzzle elements follows Spyro as he defends the Dragon Realms from the evil Red Dragon. The villain has scattered light-sapping Dark Gems across the lands and seeks to control them. With help from his allies, Spyro searches for and destroys the gems to restore the Dragon Realms.

As Spyro explores dark environments, they shift from evil to good, changing enemies, music, lighting and objects. He can use new moves such as a wall kick, tail swing and ledge grab, along with flame, freeze, water and electric breath attacks. Some sections let players take control of Hunter the Cheetah, Sgt. Byrd the penguin, Sparx the Dragonfly or Blink the Mole.
