This real-time 4X space strategy begins with a single planet and a small fleet, then challenges the player to expand an empire across the galaxy. Worlds can be explored and colonized, planets developed for trade or industry, and technologies researched. Relations with other races can be pursued through diplomacy and alliances, while espionage and military force offer alternatives.

A central feature of StarDrive is modular ship design: the choice and placement of components affect each vessel’s performance and combat tactics. Fleets can be directed with real-time strategy commands or by taking direct control of an individual ship, with formations and engagement rules also available for customization. Ground troops can be deployed to attack planetary defenses, while exploration brings random events, hidden treasures and threats.
