Terraria is an adventure sandbox game with platformer elements and a side view. You will embark on a colorful world where you can create various items, build structures, and fight a variety of randomly generated monsters. In addition, you will encounter many different tasks and challenges.
Genre and Gameplay
Terraria is a sandbox in a large open two-dimensional world with resource gathering and recipes, crafting items from them, as well as survival elements. The game has no storyline or set quests; players entertain themselves. The game is memorable for its sprite-based two-dimensional graphics, which are well-stylized for the SNES era.
The success of the game was also linked to the fortunate timing of its release — in 2011, the sandbox genre was not filled with competitors, and Terraria was promoted within the player community as "2D Minecraft." Development of the game continues, and in 2017, the graphics were significantly improved.
Character
Before starting the game, you need to create your character. Terraria has an advanced character editor that allows you to choose gender, appearance, skin color, and clothing. The particularly patient can recreate their Gandalf, Batman, Frodo Baggins, Spider-Man, and many other famous heroes.
The character's further development occurs in the game world, where they gradually level up into one of four possible classes: the strong Warrior, the agile Archer, the powerful Mage, or the cunning Summoner (who attacks with summoned creatures). The character has two main attributes — health points and mana.
Health determines the survivability score and decreases when taking damage of any type — from monsters, falling from a great height, contact with lava, or being underwater. Upon death, the character respawns at their base, but long searches can allow health to be raised several times.
Mana is consumed when using magical items and weapons, but is primarily required in large amounts by Mages.
Game World
The action of Terraria takes place in an open world that is randomly generated each time. It consists of 26 different biomes — sets of climatic zones with their own flora and fauna. These include forests, deserts, snowy fields, and more.
Exploring the world is an important aspect of gameplay. You can move sideways; for example, if the game starts in a forest, there may be a desert and ocean to the left, and jungles to the right, as well as up and down.
Below the player awaits many dungeons, caves, as well as underground versions of surface biomes. To move downward, a pickaxe, crowbar, and axe are used, which can simply remove soil, take off the next layer, or even completely clear space — the two-dimensionality in Terraria contains several layers.
Using game mechanics conventions, you can walk on water, jump up mountains without ladders, and store tons of crafting materials in your inventory.
The change of day and night affects the world and gameplay. During the day, the player explores, gathers resources, and is safe. At night, they must survive by hiding from various lurking enemies or killing them.
Single Player
In Terraria, the player is required to gradually develop their character and constantly explore everything around. At the beginning of the game, you need to build a box-like house and survive the first night in it. Since the character is awake all the time, it is advisable to explore the underground world at night, and during the day, venture to the surface to fish, gather wood, continue building the base, and engage in a thousand other activities.
All collected resources must be processed into useful items, of which there are several thousand — from various weapons and tools to construction, fishing, and even decorative objects. However, before crafting an item, you must first obtain its recipe. These can be found or purchased from traders.
Crafting also requires tools – a workbench, an anvil, a furnace, and various tools. Character development will take a lot of time – starting with a rusty pickaxe and a bent sword in hand, the player can unlock chainsaws, drills, machine guns, rocket launchers, and much more.
Items are classified by rarity and quality. The higher they are, the better the characteristics, but obtaining them is very difficult — it requires defeating powerful bosses, playing on high difficulty in expert mode, as well as venturing into additional dimensions of the game world, where everything tries to kill the player or even repeat the deadly passage time and again.
Multiplayer Game
Terraria features cooperative online play designed for 2 to 4 players. To start, you need to create a server with a new game world and character, or you can join an existing one.
Players can set the main rules themselves – the amount of resources, player hostility, and password protection. In part of the gameplay, the actions described above are suggested to be done together, which usually speeds up the game progression.
Terraria also has other online modes. In "player versus player," you can battle to the death with other players or teams, while in "capture the gems" mode, teams must craft gemstones and steal them from each other.
Important Features:
- numerous mods have been released on Steam for the game, sometimes significantly changing the gameplay;
- extensive freedom of action – go wherever you want and do whatever you like, and vast possibilities for creative expression – build, dig, and construct buildings of various configurations;
- never stop digging – over time, you will find huge caves and entire underwater worlds, and even later and deeper – you will reach hell itself!

Reviews and ratings
Terraria is a great sandbox game. I've played this game for many hours on two platforms. This game has many types of weapons, armor, magic and much more. Various opponents, bosses, NPS and all this is properly seasoned with a well-implemented multiplayer. In my opinion, Terraria has only one minus - the controls: Slightly inconvenient, but you quickly get used to it and then the game reveals its full potential. The game, although two-dimensional, is still very interesting. The game also has three difficulty levels: Easy - when you die, only coins drop out, Medium - when you die, coins and all things drop out (including weapons, armor or accessories) and Difficult, where when you die you will have to create a new character and map.
One of those games in which you can get stuck in without a break, and if you play co-op, it’s even cooler. I recommend it to everyone
An excellent sandbox game. The best game in this genre? It's hard to say, but still, you won't find the same game anywhere.
The game is cool, I don't know why people don't like 2D games. I will note that this game is like a lane, but much better, there are a lot of bosses, a sea of locations, starting from a knife to a machine gun. There are many events like UFO invasion. I advise you to hang out with friends for a couple of evenings and skip the plot))
Terraria is another sandbox, which at one time was called the “Second Minecraft,” but this is not at all true. The game is in 2D, but it is incredibly interesting because of its world + because of its RPG features. There is no such thing as a plot in the game, you just have to kill the final boss
